It’s been a year since Sony has held a PS4 conference, but they finally announced that they were going to have one this summer. This will be the first PlayStation conference since E3 2018. This isn’t to say we haven’t gotten any news in all of that time, as Sony simply shied away from large reveals at conferences and simply provided news through other means, such as their State of Play broadcasts, and the exclusive Wired interview that Mark Cerny used to reveal the PS5.
However, the company has finally returned to this type of news release, with a two hour conference planned for next month, at the ChinaJoy Exhbition in Shanghai. This event is the nation’s largest digital expo, and the Sony conference will be streamed online, starting at 5:30 PM on August 1st. The conference will reveal artwork for upcoming games, according to Paul Hunter, Walmart Canada’s Senior Gaming, Tech & Media Editor. He stated that they would be teasing 7 games at the two hour conference. However, he also said that that no first party games would be revealed. That said, it means we won’t get any kind of reveal on PlayStation exclusive games such as The Last of Us 2.
However, this conference isn’t the only major reveal Sony is looking to do. They are also listed as an exhibitor gamescom 2019, and they are rumored to be showing themselves at the 2019 Tokyo Game Show as well. At this point, we don’t know if Sony will hold another State of Play broadcast, considering all of these conferences. After all, the last broadcast was in May, when the remake of Final Fantasy 7 was revealed. There was a rumor that another State of Play broadcast had been in the works, and that it would reveal the release date of The Last of Us 2, but so far no such broadcast has been aired or further alluded to.
Either way, it’s good news for PlayStation fans, you have been looking forward to such conferences in order to reveal a larger plethora of games for the community to enjoy. As for why Sony had backed away from large conferences in the first place, that’s anyone’s guess. Either way, we can hopefully assume that the next few conferences, regardless of where they take place, will reveal more games, more plans, and more information about the upcoming PlayStation 5. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what is revealed at the ChinaJoy Exhibition, taking place on August 2-5, 2109.
