Patapon 2 may be over ten years old at this point, but its remastered version is coming to the PS4 this week; January 30th, in fact. Come Thursday, it will be available for $14.99. Originally released all the way back in 2008 for the PlayStation Portable (God rest its soul), fans have been begging for a port or a remaster of Patapon 2 ever since the original Patapon game received such treatment back in 2017.
For those who aren’t aware, Patapon is a rhythm action series in which you command an army through the power of drums. Different combinations of beats command your Patapon army to do things like attack, defend, retreat, or even jump. It’s a unique combination of music rhythm, strategy, and even a bit of RPG that endeared itself to plenty of fans around the world. As for why it’s called Patapon at all, you can thank the sounds the drums make for that one.
Despite the fact that it probably doesn’t need it, the Patapon 2 remastered edition will be compatible with 4K output on the PS4 Pro. But on top of that, the remastered version will also include a bunch of new Patapon classes, many minigames, and other new content that wasn’t present in the original game.
If you’re interested in catching up on the series, as it does actually have a cohesive plot between games, you can get the 1st Patapon game remastered for $14.99 as well. Unfortunately, you’d have to use some other means of gaming if you wanted to play Patapon 3, as that has yet to be remastered or released on newer PlayStation models. At best, you’d have to get it for the PSP or Vita in order to play it right now.
That said, seeing as how Patapon 1 and 2 got remastered, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume that Patapon 3 will eventually receive the same treatment. However, it’s also worth noting that there have been several years between the remastered versions of 1 and 2, so you may have to wait a considerable amount of time before Patapon 3 gets the same treatment. Even so, if Patapon 2 remastered does well, it seems fairly likely that the third game will follow suit without too much delay, so that’s definitely something for fans to look forward to.
