Gamers are plenty familiar with the notion of console exclusive games: Halo for the Xbox, Uncharted for the PlayStation, you know how it goes. However, it’s not every day that a console gets an exclusive mode for a game, which is what’s happening for both the PlayStation 4 and 5 in regards to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. There are a few caveats though.

The next installment in the Call of Duty franchise will apparently be offering an exclusive Zombie game mode to both PS4 and PS5 players for the course of one year. The mode is called Zombies Onslaught, and it is a two-player co-op mode that features waves of increasingly difficult zombie hordes, something most CoD players are used to at this point. Naturally, the goal is to survive for as long as possible by any means necessary.

According to PlayStation’s Blog, the Zombie Onslaught mode will have you and your co-op partner spawned on locations from various multiplayer maps. Both players will have access to the same loadouts they do in multiplayer and traditional zombies.

Regardless of the map they are on, the players’ range of movements will be restricted to an area smaller than the map itself by something called a Dark Aether orb. Zombies will begin to spawn almost immediately, forcing the two players to defend themselves. Of course, each wave will become harder and harder to survive. Once enough zombies are defeated, the Dark Aether Orb changes to a new location on the map. If you’re outside of the orb’s radius, you’ll take damage, so you have to follow it around the map.

There will be various rewards up for grabs based on the rank the player achieves, which is based on the number of elites they kill during a match. These rewards can be used in both Zombies and multiplayer modes.

It’s worth noting that this mode will only be exclusive to the PlayStation for a limited period of time, not forever. Zombies Onslaught will eventually be made available for other platforms, circa November 2021. But while this is the case, the normal zombie storyline for the game will still be available for all players on all platforms when the game is released. In that storyline, CIA team Requiem clashes with Soviet force Omega Group as they both try to discern the origin of the supernatural events that are wracking the globe. According to Activision, this storyline will have unexpected progression and twists to keep things interesting.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to debut on November 13, very shortly after the release of the Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5. As to why the PlayStation is getting an entire mode for a year while everyone else has to wait, the only thing we can do is wait until Activision or Sony feels like telling us why this is the case and how it came to be.
