While superheroes have grown to extreme popularity in the past decade or so, the fact of the matter is, it is only a select few superheroes that people love, and there are far more niche and obscure heroes out there than popular ones. They have their fans, but those fans have to really fight to hold onto the hope that their favorite heroes making it big. Unfortunately, for the fans of either Dazzler of Howard the Duck, Hulu has confirmed that they will no longer proceed with these animated shows, though they are apparently still going through with the other animated shows Hit Monkey and M.O.D.O.K.
That said, it’s not really a surprise that these shows were canceled; with Disney+ now on the field, and Marvel television in general under the direction of Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios, it’s unlikely that corporate wants too many shows that are removed from the overall connection that the MCU has established over the years. Along those lines, Hulu announced that the live-action Ghost Rider was getting the ax as well. On the other hand, Hulu VP Craig Erwich confirmed that the live-action Helstorm show is still in production, so it is a bit of a mystery as to how they are choosing which shows to continue and which ones to drop.
News of Howard the Duck and Dazzler getting canceled means that the animated crossover, The Offenders will likely be canceled as well, since that was supposed to include Howard the Duck, Dazzler, Hit Monkey, and M.O.D.O.K. With two of those shows not happening any longer, it’s safe to assume that The Offenders will not see the light of day.
Disney+, however, is still continuing with its Marvel TV show, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, which is set to premiere in the fall of this year. So even though a few niche Marvel characters won’t be making it onto popular television, it seems that Marvel fans will still be getting plenty of relevant TV shows, though they may all be tied to the MCU at this point. While that may be a good thing, it could also limit the range of content audiences get to see, but only time will tell if these decisions to cancel niche shows were wise or big mistakes. Of course, we’ll have to wait until at least one of these shows comes out in order to pass judgment.
