Like a great number Assassin’s Creed games that have come before this most recent title, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will get a very significant amount of post-launch DLC, which is no surprise for a Ubisoft game. That said, some of the DLC will be free, while other parts will be locked behind a $40 season pass. After all, content takes money to make, so no surprise there either.
That said, the $40 you’ll have to pay for the season pass will get you quite a bit of content, so it’s not like you’re being ripped off. The season pass will include two major expansions and one special quest that is based on the legendary Beowulf. The Legend of Beowulf quest focuses on the titular hero, as one might imagine, with the quest ultimately leading the players to uncover the “monstrous truth” about the warrior. Ubisoft has made it clear that this quest will be available on launch day for any player that owns the season pass, but they didn’t provide any specifics as to when the quest will be made available to everyone else for free.
As for the major expansions that will only be accessible via the season pass, we’ll go into plenty of detail regarding each of them down below.
DLC 1: Wrath of the Druids
The first of the two expansions included in the season pass is called Wrath of the Druids, and scheduled to release sometime in the vicinity of Spring 2021. Ubisoft has described this DLC as follows: “In this new adventure, players will journey to Ireland and unravel the mysteries of an ancient and mysterious druidic cult, tracking and discovering their members. Diving into Gaelic myths and folklores, they’ll need to fight their way through haunted forests and dazzling landscapes while gaining influence among Gaelic kings.”
DLC 2: The Siege of Paris
The second expansion included in the season pass has been dubbed The Siege of Paris, and it’s due out in Summer 2021. This expansion will allow players to do exactly what you think it will, which is experience the historical Viking conflict that the title refers to, featuring “key historical figures” from the battle itself. Ubisoft has described this DLC as follows: “During this key moment in history, players will infiltrate the fortified city of Paris and the River Seine under a prolonged siege, uncover enemy secrets, and form strategic alliances to safeguard their clan’s future.”
While we’d question calling this battle a “key point” in history, we have no doubts that it will be a very exciting addition to the game itself.
Seasonal Content
The paid content from the season pass is not the only content that will be available to the many players of this game. In addition to the aforementioned paid content, everyone will be getting free seasonal DLC via “new narrative content” and in-game events. Each season will last for three months, and each season will include a wide variety of new content. For example, the first season, which will be in December 2020, will include a new settlement area, a new River Raids mode, the Yule festival event, and new skills and abilities. Needless to say, any free content we don’t have to pay for is great, but for your sake, we’ll provide a bit more in the way of specifics below.
Valhalla Season 1 Content:
- A new settlement area for the players, which will allow them to continue expanding and growing their settlement beyond its current space
- The Yule Festival, a traditional Viking celebration, will be available for players to enjoy within their settlement
- A new game mode called the River Raids will be made available for all players. This game mode will build off of the game’s core raiding mechanic, with the aim of delivering a challenging, dynamic, and, most importantly, highly replayable raid experience
- Ranks for the Jomsviking will be added in as well. In this game, players can are able to create their own unique lieutenant to be an integral part of their raiding crew. They can also recruit a few created lieutenants from the minds of both their friends and the community. Season 1 will add an update to this feature, allowing their Jomsviking to earn XP and rank up – the higher the rank of the lieutenant, the more silver the player will earn when their lieutenant is recruited by other plates
- Last but not least, Season 1 will include new player skills and abilities, gear and weapons, and cosmetic items for the longship, settlement, horse, and raven.
As for Season 2, that is aiming for a March launch in 2021. Like Season 1, it will add a new game mode that has yet to be revealed, a new Jomsviking refresh, more festivals for the player to partake, even more gear and cosmetic items for players to collect. There will be at least two more seasons, for a total of four minimum, though Ubisoft has not revealed any details on what those seasons will contain yet, nor have they stated whether or not there will only be four for certain, or if that is the minimum there will be with the likelihood of many more.
During a press release, Ubisoft stated that this is not the full extent of all the content being added, as there is more to come. This includes the no-conflict Discovery Tour mode that’s coming in 2021, a mode that was made very popular in some of the earlier games. “There will be more to come as the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla development team is committed to supporting the game and continued improvement of the core experience with additional content, yet to be revealed,” Ubisoft said.
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla releases on November 10th for PS4, PC, Xbox One, and the Xbox Series X/S. It will be available on PC via the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft’s personal store, but unfortunately, not via Steam. Finally, the game will be made available on both the PS5 and Amazon Luna when they release.
