The Retail Apocalypse is Frightening, but Walmart, Target and eBay Continue to Thrive

The Retail Apocalypse is Frightening, but Walmart, Target and eBay Continue to Thrive

The past few years haven’t been kind to many department stores. Retailers across the country are floundering, their stocks cratering as they fail to adapt to the times. Sears is essentially gone, J.C. Penney is well on its way to the same fate, and other department stores, like Macy’s and Kohl’s are barely any better off. And yet, through all of that, Walmart and Target are actually growing. The gap between retailers struggling with a buildup of inventory before the holidays and those that are thriving is widening every day.

UPS FedEx USPS

Both UPS and FedEx Could Benefit From The Postal Service’s Pension Problems

A changing shipping landscape has created some rough waters for a $70 billion shipping giant, but it isn’t FedEx or the United Parcel Service. In fact, it’s the United States Postal Service, which loses around $400 million a month. And yet, such hefty losses aren’t even its biggest problem. It’s actually the overwhelming size of its pension obligations. Taking care of that financial problem would be difficult, and could be beneficial to publicly traded parcel shippers; such a benefit would even overshadow current concerns over competition with Amazon.

Walmart Restructures its Finance Teams as it Works to Integrate Jet.com

Ever since Amazon made online retail the ultimate battleground for modern stores, Walmart has been trying to merge its physical store and online operations. Right now, their finance executives are reshuffling as they merge Jet.com into their online services. The Bentonville company stated in a memo that they would merge the U.S. Finance group into the greater overall finance team. The combined U.S. segment team will be led by Michael Dastugue, the company’s U.S. Finance Chief. The Finance Chief for Sam’s Club, Steve Schmitt, will be the CFO for the e-commerce division.

Robots, man! Amazon’s Next Big Strategy Could be a Personal Home Robot

Since The Jetsons, the idea of a robot servant that cares for all of our needs has been deeply engrained in the minds of many people. And naturally, lots of companies and tech firms have tried to realize that fantasy over the years. The problem has been tackled by large tech giants like Samsung, and promising startups lead by robotic experts and AI researchers. Unfortunately, nearly all of these attempts have still ended in relative failure. Robots that can serve needs more complex than providing weather updates are still a whim of the future.

eBay Stocks Improve, But Questions Remain

eBay Stocks Improve, But Questions Remain

After reporting better than expected second quarter results, eBay stocks are trading higher. However, there are still some serious cracks showing within the business. The worst signs of weakness are in the core U.S. marketplace operation. More aggressive state tax enforcement on e-commerce companies is causing some serious setbacks. Even so, Wall Street analysts seem content with the current state of things.
