For those of you who don’t know what The Witcher is, it’s a video game series developed by CD Projekt Red about a special monster hunter whose job it is to, well kill monsters, though a lot of other plots and goals come up along the way. The game trilogy has received critical acclaim and is well-beloved within the community as one of the best action RPGs ever, thanks to a vivid, well imagined world, a charismatic cast, and side quests that are actually worth the player’s time.
The series was so popular, in fact, that Netflix decided a TV show was in order, and the first season of it is now done filming. We know this due to the statement on social media by the main actor and showrunner. There were also some hints that more seasons could be on the way, though that was conjecture at best and is by no means a confirmation. After all, Netflix hasn’t even seen if the first season will be successful yet.
The man who will play the protagonist of the series, Geralt of Rivia, is Henry Cavill. He made an Instagram post on Thursday that said “Season 1 of The Witcher has finally come to an end. And although I’m pulling a face here it has been an incredible journey!”
Showrunner Lauren Hissrich confirmed the situation with a selfie posted on Twitter, which read “That’s a wrap on season one! I have enough gray hair to play Geralt now, but it’s been the best year of my life.”
Many people have pointed out that both posts mentioned ‘Season 1’ of the series, which would bear the implication that there will be more seasons requiring more numerical labels. As stated previously however, this is mostly just a mention of the desire for more seasons in the optimal situation. Obviously, if the show does poorly, it is unlikely the Netflix will renew it for another season at all, never mind many. That said, if the first season does go well, it is very likely several more will be needed; while many players are only familiar with the plot of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, there are two equally long and content filled games that game before that. Covering the plot of the entire trilogy will undoubtedly take many episodes, at least if they want to get it right. Hopefully they won’t try to rush it unnecessarily a la Game of Thrones.
But until the show releases, we can’t know anything about how good it will be. We can only hope that Netflix will do such a beloved game franchise and book trilogy justice. After all, making a great adaptation of something we love is hard, but ruining it is extremely easy.
