Sony has just recently added the longtime game developer Insomniac Games to their roster. Well-known for series such as Ratchet & Clank, the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy, and the far more recent Marvel’s Spider-Man, the studio revealed on Monday that they have been acquired in their entirety by Sony, making it the 14th studio to join Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, alongside other popular developers such as Little Big Planet’s Media Molecule and Horizon Zero Dawn’s Guerilla Games.
While Insomniac is only just now being acquired fully by Sony, they’ve had a long history of collaboration with the company, spanning several decades. Both Ratchet & Clank and the original Spyro trilogy were released exclusively on Sony consoles, as was the more recent Marvel’s Spider-Man, which debuted solely on the PlayStation 4.
Sony states that Insomniac’s day-to-day operations are “expected to be run by the current management team in conjunction with SIE WWS San Mateo Studio.”
SIE chairman Shawn Laden seems pleased with the situation, saying “Insomniac Games is one of the most highly acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled.”
Insomniac founder and CEO Ted Price is also clearly on board with the acquisition of his company by Sony, bringing up the long history they’ve had with PlayStation and Sony since day one.
“We’ve enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel’s Spider-Man was a testament to this. We’re excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our longtime WWS partners. Most of all, we look forward to delivering fresh, new experiences for our fans.”
What Insomniac will be working on now that they are directly under Sony’s guiding hand is a mystery, but more Spider-Man games seem likely, considering the success of the last game and the rising popularity of the hero himself in cinema. But of course, their next game could be anything, and until some sort of information is revealed we can’t possibly know what that might be. Either way, considering Insomniac’s long-standing and very successful relationship with Sony over in the past, it’s safe to assume that the two of them will likely get along very well, and we can probably look forward to the next few years of game development they have to offer us.
It is curious however, to speculate on which company Sony may be interested in acquiring next.
