While Sonic and Sega as a whole have always trailed a bit behind their ever-popular Nintendo rivals, that doesn’t mean they don’t plan to take advantage of the coming year. Sega has announced the Sonic 2020 Project, which will have the company announcing Sonic related news on the 20th of every month this year. Of course, the announcement for January was actually the announcement that this project was going to happen, so it’s a bit of a cheap move on that front.
As for upcoming months, we all know that February is going to be a big boost for Sonic, considering that his movie will be coming out on Valentine’s Day. However, that event doesn’t actually have anything to do with the Sonic 2020 event. In fact, Sega hasn’t been very informative regarding the project at all; despite saying that there will be major announcements on the 20th of every month, they haven’t actually given us a hint as to what any of those announcements will be about.
We have no idea what the announcements will be in regards to, and that includes whether or not new games will be announced at any point this year (though it is safe to assume we will see at least one Sonic game).
Hopefully, some of the announcements will be major Sonic games, as the Sega mascot hasn’t been overly prominent in the current console generation of Xbox One and PS4. Sonic Mania, Sonic Forces, and Team Sonic Racing are some of the only notable titles that came out on these consoles, so 2020 needs to include some new games; or maybe even a game for the upcoming next generation of consoles near 2020’s end.
Either way, we’ve got no idea what to expect, but if Sega truly manages to deliver exciting news on the 20th of every month, 2020 could very well be a very busy year for the Blue Blur. That said, seeing as how this month’s announcement was a bit misleading, one shouldn’t get their hopes too high; it’s very unlikely that the next 11 months will all reveal utterly breathtaking news.
Still, considering the usual underdog status of Sonic and Sega, just about anything going in their favor (and that of their fans) will be a nice change of pace, so a bit of optimism certainly isn’t uncalled for.
