Arnold Schwarzenegger Won’t Be Voicing The Terminator For Mortal Kombat 11

It was on Thursday that Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat creator, got on Twitter to share his excitement over this. "Part of me still can’t believe we got Arnold," he said. One could be forgiven for assuming this would mean Schwarzenegger would voice the character within the game, but unfortunately, this is not the case.

On Wednesday, NetherRealm Studios revealed a new trailer introducing some interesting characters to its most recent popular fighting game, Mortal Kombat 11, which is currently the best-selling game of 2019. One of the most well-known characters being added in is the Terminator T-800, made popular by Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator film series.

It was on Thursday that Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat creator, got on Twitter to share his excitement over this. “Part of me still can’t believe we got Arnold,” he said. One could be forgiven for assuming this would mean Schwarzenegger would voice the character within the game, but unfortunately, this is not the case.

 

Warner Bros. Interactive, who produces the Mortal Kombat franchise, confirmed that the man would not be voicing the character that he made famous, though his physical likeness would be used for it. A sound-a-like actor will be used instead, It’s not that Arnold’s voice hasn’t been used in video games before, as he has voiced characters in game movie tie-ins, such as the 1991 Terminator 2 and Terminator 3 in 2003.

However, it could be that Schwarzenegger, as governor of California, doesn’t want to seemingly condone an extremely violent video game like Mortal Kombat. He has repeatedly supported a bill that would restrict the sale and rental of violent video games to minors. Back in 2014, as he promoted the film Sabotage, he stated that “The video games our children play are much, much more violent than anything in this movie.”

Of course, it’s not that hard to see why Schwarzenegger might be taking this stance as the governor of California. Mortal Kombat is, after all, one of the most violent and gory video games of all time. It holds the dubious award of being the very game that spurred the creation of the ESRB rating system that we use to classify our video games today. And naturally, Mortal Kombat 11, being the newest iteration on the most recent consoles, is naturally the most violent and bloody member of the series so far.

Taking all of this into account, it’s no wonder why Schwarzenegger would take this stance, though, from a gamer perspective, it’s a little disappointing that we won’t get his voice for the Terminator in Mortal Kombat 11. Sure, we may get a sound-a-like voice actor, but it just isn’t the same. Still, it is a little ironic that he has starred in so many violent action movies, but won’t do a video game.
