The great chicken sandwich war of 2019 started when Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen announced it would start selling chicken sandwiches based on an observation that a popular restaurant in Long Beach, California tried to pass off Popeyes Chicken as its own.

Twitter aptly named this scandal #POPEYESgate, and the great chicken sandwich war began when the chain officially announced in an Aug. 8 press release that it would begin selling chicken sandwiches Aug. 12. Instead of suing the restaurant owner, Popeyes collaborated with Kim Sanchez to let consumers taste the new sandwich four days before its initial launch.

“To be honest, I thought they were calling to sue me,” said Kim Sánchez, owner of Sweet Dixie Kitchen, said in a press release. “We have a long history with Popeyes, but we’ve always said Popeyes chicken is the best fried chicken we ever had. So, we are thrilled to collaborate with them to launch and serve their delicious Popeyes Chicken Sandwich.”

After the launch, people began comparing Popeyes chicken sandwich to other fast food chains nationwide such as Wendy’s, Chick-fil-a, KFC and McDonalds. According to thetakeout.com, a popular food review site, franchises are unable to keep the new chicken sandwich in stock. The Takeout even reported that its coverage of Popeye’s chicken sandwich debut has generated more than $23 million in free press for the chain, according to numbers from the International Business Times.

Popular Youtube reviewer ReviewBrah on his channel TheReportOfTheWeek, a channel that specifically reviews fast food with more than 1.5 million subscribers, jumped into the conversation to truly find out which sandwich is better.

“This is the face-off of the century,” Review Brah said in a recent video. “And the amount of requests that I got for this was incredible, I was actually surprised. I was checking my Twitter the other day, I know I was going all out, and I was seeing tweet after tweet of people tweeting around saying, ‘Can you review the chicken sandwich from Popeyes and can you make a comparison to the Chick-fil-a sandwich?’”

Review Brah said he caved to the pressure and that Popeyes is making waves with this new chicken sandwich.

“You can see all of this tension going on,” Review Brah said. “Things are heating up.”

After tasting both sandwiches in one sitting, Review Brah said that he had to give Popeyes credit.

“I have had pretty bad experiences with Popeyes in the past, you remember the glory days with shrimp where I was destroyed internally from it,” Review Brah said in his video. “I was very disappointed, frankly. I’ve got to say, the portion size for the Popeyes sandwich is bigger than I thought it would be, but the chicken has this juiciness to it which kind of caught me off guard.”

As for Chick-fil-A’s sandwich, Review Brah said the chicken wasn’t as big but packs a punch in terms of flavor.

The final verdict from Review Brah’s point of view — he’s still a fan of Chick-fil-A, taking into consideration the flavor, portion sizes and price points.

“There both good,” Review Brah said. “People wanted a decision. I tried them both. I’m still a fan of the Chick-fil-A Original Chicken Sandwich.”
