Let’s be honest: you either think M. Night is a genius or a total screwup. Probably depends on which of his movies you have seen. Generally, people tend to like The Sixth Sense. Without fail everyone despises The Last Airbender (Movie? What Movie?). Either way, it’s been a while since the notorious director has put a movie out, and whether you are expecting it or dreading it, that movie isn’t all that far off now. A bit more information about it has come to light, though it’s admittedly not that much.
In fact, all that is really known at this point is a release date and some of the actor casting. We know that the film is slated to hit theaters on July 23rd, 2021. Right now, the movie is untitled and there’s pretty much no indication of what the story is going to be, other than the fact that M. Night himself will be writing it (not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing). As he has since The Visit, the director will be funding the movie himself, though it will be distributed by Universal.
There are reports about which actors will have roles in the film. Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Abbey Lee will all be joining the cast of the movie, though we have no way of knowing what their roles may be or how important those roles are in the film as a whole. They’ll be joining up with the rest of the cast that has been confirmed thus far, those individuals being Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff, and Vicky Krieps.
Apparently, there’s no indication of when the actual filming for the movie is going to start this year, but if things go according to plan, that filming should start before this year is out: it would almost have to in order to make the July deadline of next year. If not, it’s possible that the movie’s debut could be delayed to whatever time is necessary.
It’s worth noting that, whatever this movie ends up being, it’s been a fairly decent amount of time since his last film. The last film he did was 2019’s Glass, the final film the Unbreakable Trilogy he started back in 2000. So, there will have been a whole year at least in which no movie from the producer was seen, though he has most recently been working as producer and episode director for Apple TV’s Servant.
Either way, the news that a new film is on the way is one that people probably feel a little iffy on considering the kind of divisive nature of Shyamalan’s popularity. Maybe his movie will be the next Sixth Sense, and be something that everyone actually likes? Or maybe it’ll be something everyone hates, like another movie that shall not be named. Until more information comes to light, it’s impossible to make a fair judgment on whether or not the film will potentially be good.
