Power. It’s about as broad of a term as any, but everyone seeks it in some way, shape or form. In this guide, we’re seeking knowledge of a different type of power. We’ll be looking at things that produce voltage, more specifically, Honda Inverter Generators. Most people are familiar with how generators work, (those things you use when your power goes out) but inverter generators are a relatively new way of harnessing energy which carry their purpose out a bit differently than their predecessors.

Honda Generator Oil: Types to Use, Changing and Oil Alert System

A generator is only as good as the stuff that you put into it. Without proper fuel and other pieces, a Honda generator will not perform to the best of its abilities. Even more concerning, it won't last for as long as it should. What we’re here to focus on, Honda inverter generator oil, is essential to maintaining quality.

What type of oil should I be using for my Honda generator?

You should use 10W-30 motor oil for your Honda generator. Determining what type of oil to use largely comes down to viscosity, or how thick it is.10W-30 motor oil The first number, 10, refers to how thick it is in cold temperatures. W stands for winter (when it’s cold). The second number, 30, refers to how its composition in warmer temperatures. Regardless of the temperature, this type of oil works for whatever conditions you find yourself in. Luckily, this is one of the most common types of oil. You can find it anywhere, though we emphasize purchasing name brands. A generator is an expensive machine. Because of this, we recommend high quality oil. With premium oil, the generator has its best chance to work at maximum efficiency for the longest amount of time.

Check All 10W-30 Oil Prices

Do you put a different type of oil in weaker or stronger generators?

Regardless of power provided by your generator, the type of oil remains the same. If you have the Honda EU1000i, Honda EU2000i, Honda EU3000, or any one of their other inverter generators, the story stays the same. Amount of oil, however, will change since engine size changes. With a larger engine, you have a larger tank for oil. With a smaller engine, you need less oil—you get it. One reason we love Honda is due to the resources they make available (for free) to their customers online. If you have a question about your specific generator, there is a manual with more information than you could ever need on the Honda website. Besides individual manuals, they provide recommendations for maintenance, general care and safety.

What else do I need to know about oil?

  1. You should check your oil level every time you use your generator
  2. Turning the fuel valve to OFF ensures that no oil gets into the engine
  3. Diluted oil could cause substantial damage to the engine
  4. Everything else you need to know can be found here

Changing the oil for a Honda generator

Everyone’s favorite task with any engine: changing the oil. We won’t go incredibly in-depth, but will give you the basics. If you want the deluxe version, check out this article. If you can’t tell where the oil even goes in, that’s because it’s under a cover (which is really easy to remove). A critical element, you cannot change the oil if it is cold or hot, only warm. To accomplish this, briefly turn the generator on. From here it’s pretty simple. Drain the oil. Add more oil. Put everything back together. Presto, oil changed.

'Oil Alert' system

We aren’t perfect, no one is. When it comes to using a generator, our mind can be in a million places. Whether you’re using it after a storm and you’re without power, or enjoying some quality time on a camping trip, things get complicated. Bottom line, you don’t have time to pay attention to every little detail. To help protect your generator, Honda includes an Oil Alert system. When oil levels get critically low, this system triggers an indicator light and turns the engine off. In doing so, any damage to the engine or generator as a whole is prevented. On generators of lesser quality, there are no shutoffs that prevent damage. Even if there is no immediate damage, it is detrimental to the long-term health of the machine. Honda is a few steps ahead, helping out as you spend your energy elsewhere. Honda put out a great video via YouTube that discusses the oil change procedure. Common Questions and Answers about Honda Generator Oil

Generators work on many of the same principles that car engines do, and just like cars they require oil to run correctly. Making sure that your generator has the right oil (and right amount) will increase its efficiency and make sure it lasts as long as possible. Here’s what you need to know about generator oil for your Honda generator:

Do Honda generators come with oil?

No. Honda generators do not come with oil. You will need to purchase oil separately and add oil prior to using your new Honda generator.

What type of oil does a Honda EU2000i 2200 generator take?

If you have a Honda EU2200i generator, it needs to use SAE 10W-30 oil.

Can I use synthetic oil in my Honda generator?

If you have a Honda generator, you can use synthetic oil in it. However, if you have a brand-new generator, make sure that you check the owner manual and run the engine with conventional oil first.

How much oil does a Honda generator take?

The amount of oil that your Honda generator will require depends on its size. If you have the EU3000i, for example, you may end up using a little more than half a quart of oil. Other generators may use a little less than half a quart.

How long does oil last in a generator?

If you have a generator, you are going to need to change the oil often. Typically, generator oil will last around 50 hours of runtime before needing replaced. Make sure to read the owner’s manual though because each generator is different.

How often should I change the oil in my Honda generator?

Generators go through oil pretty quickly, so you want to make sure that you stay on top of changing it. If you have a new generator, you will need to change the oil after the first 24 hours of use. After that, you typically need to change it after every 50-60 hours of use time.

Can I use car oil in my generator?

The type of oil that goes into your generator is the same stuff that goes into a car. You just want to make sure that the oil you are putting in your generator is the correct weight. 10W-40 oil for your vehicle should not be used in a generator that requires 5W-30 oil.

Can I use 10w40 in my generator?

The type of oil that you use in your generator will depend on how it was manufactured. Check the owner’s manual to see if 10W-40 is suitable for your engine.

How do I change the oil in my Honda 5000 generator?

Changing the oil on a generator is not difficult. Simply remove the drain plug and washer as well as the oil filler cap and drain the oil. Reinstall the plug and washer, refill your oil, and cap it back off.

Honda 7000 Generator EU7000is Overview

The Honda 7000 generator, model EU7000is, is a 7000 watt 120/240V inverter generator that can be used in countless situations with countless appliances to make bad situations better and outdoor excursions bearable for even the least outdoorsy. This is a big generator. There’s no getting around that. With a dry weight of 261 lbs., there needs to be an easy way to transport it around. Luckily, this isn’t Honda’s first rodeo. Between strong and durable wheels, and fold-down handles, the only difficult part of transportation is getting this in and out of a truck bed. If you keep it in your garage or shed for use on your property, this concern doesn’t even apply to you. There are two ways to start the Honda EU7000iS; electric and recoil. With the push of a button, all systems are go. Recoil serves as a backup for the electronic start system. Once running, the i-Monitor system will track hours of operation, battery life and other various diagnostics. Thanks to this feature, you can monitor your generator’s health and catch potential issues before they affect performance. One thing we love about Honda generators is their Eco-Throttle System. This piece of technology maximizes efficiency, reduces fuel consumption and helps prolong the life of your generator since it won’t run harder than it needs to. When the 5.1-gallon tank is filled, it will run 18 hours at peak efficiency. If you’re working it to the bone, you’ll only get 6 hours. In most cases, the generator will end up running somewhere in-between—both 6 and 18 hours are the extreme. If you want to stay safe (and follow Honda guidelines), they recommend using gasoline only. If you were to try using propane or other natural gases, you’d be making complete safety more difficult, or even impossible, to achieve. For noise, the EU7000iS is pretty quiet—another perk of inverter technology. While running, noise output will range anywhere from 50-60 decibels, not much of a difference from a normal conversation between a few people.

What can the EU7000iS power?

Starting small, the Honda 7000 generator can power appliances such as televisions, blenders, lights and other low power-drawing electronics. Due to its use of inverter technology, it is also safe to use things like computers, game consoles and other delicate electronics.  Notably, it can power a bunch of these at the same time. You aren’t spending thousands of dollars to power a reading light. We get that. Honda gets that. When you start getting into the larger appliances, there’s not much around your house or campsite that can’t be powered. What can the EU7000iS power At the top, this generator can be used to keep your freezer frozen during a power outage. After a flood, it will power a sump pump to clear out your basement and begin the agonizing cleanup process. Additionally, it will power window AC units and small furnaces making July camping trips and mid-winter expeditions possible. In the event you need even more power, a second EU7000iS can be paralleled to provide 14000 watts of power. What may seem like a daunting process is actually quite simple and involves connecting the two generators through a few wires (an accessory manufactured by Honda). From the smallest to the largest appliances you own, you’re in good hands with a generator that harnesses this much power is a controlled fashion.

Honda 7000 EU7000is Generator Review

What we liked

Clean and Powerful

In most cases, inverter generators are less powerful than convention models. The EU7000iS offers a rare combination of sufficient power for large jobs, and the clean and stable reliability inverter loyalists have come to know and love.

On the inverter side, you have power that is stable enough to safely run electronics. With conventional generators, you’re more prone to surges and momentary lapses. When you use an inverter generator, you are paying a premium for power you can count on to run even your most delicate (and irreplacable) appliances.

Due to the price of inverter generators, the most common models you’ll see out there are only a few thousand watts. The EU7000iS comes with a full 7000 watts (as you might have guessed from the name). From a small fan in your living room and your morning coffee to window air conditioners and full-size refrigerators, this model generator has you covered.

Built-in Safety Features

There are three lights on the generator’s side. When all is right, none will be on.

Each light serves as an indicator for potential trouble, just like the lights on the dashboard of your car. They alert you to issues with output, overload and oil. Keeping track of these three things are essential to keeping your machine in pristine condition and keeping the onus off of you makes life easier.Built-In Safety Features

When things get to be too much, there are electronic circuit breakers that turn your machine off when necessary. By automatically shutting off, just like the breakers in your home, the generator is protecting itself from sustaining serious damage. In turn, this protects your large investment—the tool which will provide you power in a time of need.

What we didn’t like

Honda EU7000iS Price

The Honda EU7000iS is powerful, but expensive. With a list price coming in at more than $4000, a generator that comes in a (relatively) small package, but with a large price tag must be properly taken care of.

Since it is used outside, it would be very easy to ignore every nick or scratch that appears on the outside. While the outside is mostly aesthetic (you definitely don’t want knobs breaking off or labels removed), it reflects how you treat your generator.

Likewise, the interior components must be protected, maintained and cleaned in order to ensure a long life, as well as proper function. When you invest the equivalent cash value of the car you buy your child to learn to drive, you need to take care of it.

In order to make up for the price that you’re paying, this should be the last generator you buy. This means that what you pay (plus gas, oil and any repairs) will be all you pay. No more going cheap on a generator only to realize you need a new one two years later. This is a generator that if you buy, you need to treat it right. Otherwise, it will be a waste of money (and a lot of it).

Weight

Wheels and handles are great for flat terrain. Where things start to get hairy is if you use your generator anywhere besides your home.

One of the most common professions where a generator is used is on a construction site. They’re great to run power tools off of and provide an easy solution to lack of power in a remote location. But, what happens when you need to get it upstairs in a home that is only framed out or even in and out of a truck?Weight & Portability

Special considerations must be made. You’ll likely end up using long extension cords or battling the terrain to move it close to where you’re working. This issue also doubles on campsites as you do not want to let it out of your sight (thousands of dollars invested, remember?). Luckily, once it’s on the ground, you can move it freely and if you have a truck you can use planks to get it back in your bed, just like a lawnmower.

Is this the generator for you?

Right off the bat, one of the things that jumps out is that this is an inverter generator. While the price might not match the power of conventional generators, it more than makes up for it with stability and the variety of appliances that can be used with it.

If you plan on finding yourself in a remote location, but cannot go off the grid and still need Wi-Fi and your computer, using this generator will have you feeling like you’re right in the office. Now the generator might not be able to replicate your comfy desk chair or nice view, but it provides the essentials. With this generator, you can set up shop regardless of where you are, or what’s going on around you.

Another aspect that gets overlooked by many is how easily this generator starts. If you have a bad back, shoulder, or just aren’t strong enough to pull start a large generator, you need another way. By including a push start, Honda has made the EU7000iS accessible for nearly everyone.

The only drawback is the weight of the model, which without the wheels and handles would be impossible to move. By easing transportation and starting, Honda has made this an ideal option for those who do not want to, or are unable to exert major physical force to use a generator.

Do not buy this generator if your power goes out once a year. Do buy this generator if you lose power frequently, go camping a few times a year or are a mainstay at outdoor tailgates. Whether it’s for business, pleasure or something in-between, if you use a generator with some regularity, you need an efficient, reliable and long-lasting generator.

The EU7000iS is a model you can trust for years and run a variety of appliances off of. Additionally, it comes from Honda—a brand that has grown synonymous with high-quality machines and customer support.

Honda 5000 EM5000S Generator Overview

With 5000 watts, your options are far from limited. To make things even better, this model can jump to 7000 watts for up to 10 seconds to start larger equipment. What makes this such an appealing generator is that not only do you gain the ability to run appliances for extended periods of time with it, the added power helps to get any machine around you going, even in less than ideal conditions. With a multitude of places to plug in, running multiple appliances or machines is slight work for the EM5000S. Even on other powerful generators, one of the most common problems we’ve encountered is not having enough outlets to take full advantage of the machine. With the Honda 5000 generator, that problem has become a thing of the past. Whether you want to run a single appliance or a half dozen, you can do so without any additional rigging. Running at maximum efficiency, this generator can run for around 11 hours. As you add more and more appliances on, run time will begin to gradually decrease. Running at maximum capacity, the 6-gallon engine will run for around 8 hours. There is an internal battery included with this generator. While it helps to add stability, you’ll see the largest benefit of this addition at start. One way to identify if the battery is failing is if you’re having difficulty with the electric start. Luckily, replacing the battery is a simple process. A lot of how smoothly the EM5000S runs depends on how well you keep up with maintenance. By regularly cleaning the carburetor and air filter, you are promoting the overall health of the generator. Keep up in these two main areas and you’ll have a machine that runs well for years to come. Despite its 200+ lb. frame, transporting the EM5000S is a breeze thanks to a built-in handle and wheels. The only time you might have an issue is lifting it in and out of your vehicle. When the time comes for this, always make sure to have a few people pitching in.

What can the EM5000S power?

On their website, Honda gives a sampling of what just 2900 running watts includes. At startup, these machines require 5300 watts. Adding much more to the equation would be pushing the limits of the EM5000S. It is important to note that if you start these appliances at different times you will never hit the full 5300 watts. Basically, in order to maintain minimal usage, start and use appliances only as you need them. Okay so back to that example. At the wattage mentioned above, you can run a refrigerator, small furnace, five lights, a television and microwave at once. Not too shabby for a single generator. Some other things around your household that the EM5000S can power are furnace fans, garage door openers and air conditioners. In general, it will be difficult to find an appliance around your home or in your RV that this generator cannot power. Again, one of the main features that attract people to this model in particular is the power it offers. No paralleling, no running multiple generators—this one takes care of all your needs.

Honda 5000 EM5000S Generator Review

What we liked

Duality of Start

With an engine as large as the one that comes with the Honda 5000 generator (EM5000S), starting it is not always so easy. For some people, pull starting an engine like this is entirely out of the realm of possibility.

In order to accommodate users of all comfort levels, Honda knew they had to be understanding. While it took a little extra effort, they were able to add an electric start feature. With the turn of a key, you start your engine and have enough power to run large appliances and machines for extended periods of time.

With an advanced electric start system, older or weaker individuals (even children too) will have no problem starting this generator. If this system fails, it does require immediate attention in order to function. As a failsafe, the ES5000S can be started using a recoil system. Admittedly, having to use this option will cut down on the number of people capable of starting the generator.

Plenty of Places to Plug In

The EM5000S has a lot of power. Nothing would be worse than not being able to take advantage of all that power.

Unless you’re using every bit of energy the machine can supply, you need multiple places to plug in. You know, for the multiple appliances you’re going to be powering. We know that extension cords and power strips are out there that increase your number of outlets, but any way you frame it, these are less safe than plugging directly into the generator.

To start, there are four plug outlets and a handful of other spots to hook various wires up to. If you want to run a single large appliance, no problem at all. If you need to power a half dozen smaller appliances, with most generators you won’t have the ability to. With the EM5000S, you will.

Consistency and Stability

When you turn on a generator, you want to know exactly what you’re getting. Not only is it essential to crafting plans and parties based on what you can power, consistency and stability translates to safety.

Honda EM5000S generators come with iAVR (Intelligent Automatic Voltage Regulation) technology. What this boils down to is being able to use sensitive electronics at the same time you need raw power to keep more demanding appliances on. If you want to do one or the other, this generator supports those demands as well.

Generators of lesser quality cannot be trusted to power electronics due to fear of shorting them out, and ultimately ruining them, that is not the case with the EM5000S. Honda was able to develop a superior combination of power and precision when compared to competitors, giving them a clear leg up on the competition.

What we didn’t like

Voltage Selector

Okay, we admit that for a lot of people this will be a plus. When we decided to put it on the “What we didn’t like” list, we were thinking of those with minimal experience in generators and similar technology. Advice for people that this applies to; learn your machine and what it can do. After all, it’s a pricy investment—we want you to get the most out of it you can.

On the EM5000S, you have the option to use a full 240 volts, or limit output to 120 volts. In many ways, this will help you increase efficiency and only use the power necessary to run appliances that are critical. If you stay on top of this, not a big deal. If you don’t know what you’re doing or are forgetful, it could lead to some confusion or trouble.

Size

In all fairness to Honda, it’s difficult to contain an extremely powerful generator in a small body. With dimensions of 41.1″ x 27.8″ x 28.3″, many people will have a hard time finding a good place for this around their property. Additionally, dry weight for this model is 232 lbs.

On the flip side, Honda protects the more delicate parts of the generator through the use of a sturdy metal frame. While the frame is essential to protecting the engine and other internal components, it only adds to the “bulkiness” of the generator. The frame doubles as an easy place to hold onto when lifting or moving the generator with multiple people—a silver lining if there is any.

Is this the generator for you?

Depending on the retailer, the Honda EM5000S will run you anywhere between $2500 and $3000. Based on price alone, we wouldn’t recommend this for any person who simply wants to have a generator in case of an emergency.

The EM5000S is tailored for those who regularly need power produced by a generator. Whether you’re a camping aficionado, live in an area where grid power is inconsistent or unavailable, or a person that finds themselves in regular need of supplemental power, this is for you.

While this is not an exhaustive or exclusive list of the types of people who should purchase this generator, it helps you recognize the intended market. The EM5000S is a generator for people who need a generator—not just want one for a rainy day.

One of the most important things to take under consideration when deciding if this is the generator for you is power. Due to the sheer amount of energy it can produce, the EM5000S will provide unnecessary power for many. If you’re in need of a generator that can power electronics, major appliances and other machinery, purchasing a powerful generator is about the only option you have.

Another major consideration is maintenance. On any machine, cutting corners leads to added costs later on. We aim to find product that limit those costs.

Things like spark plugs might wear out, but these are easy and affordable to replace. Where you (your wallet) can really get hurt, however, is with the engine. When it comes to engines, there are two things to consider. Is the engine constructed well and with quality materials? The other is, will a mechanic have any idea how it’s built when it inevitably needs repair or routine upkeep?

Honda iGX engines check both these boxes. When it comes to a Honda manufactured engine, you know that you are getting something that has been designed, built and later improved upon. With the reputation they have, it is easy to trust the product you’re going to be using to provide heat, air and power for your family in times of need.

Another major benefit of shopping Honda is that when things go wrong beyond control of the customer, they have a track record of standing behind their products. They’re willing to make necessary remedies available and, the most impressive, admit when they’ve made a mistake somewhere in the production process.

With this Honda generator, that problem has become a thing of the past. Whether you want to run a single appliance or a half dozen, you can do so without any additional rigging.

Honda 3000 EU3000IH1A Handi Generator Overview

The EU3000iH1A, commonly known as the EU3000i Handi or Honda 3000, is an inverter generator produced by Honda. Inverter generators are part of a sweeping theme to create more efficient and stable energy. Due to the advanced mechanics behind it, inverter technology produces more power while using less fuel than convention generators. Power is stable and clean, which on the road, or in a power outage, is about all you can ask for. Whether it’s for basic necessities, or more leisurely things like computers and televisions, inverter technology is what you need. Efficiency plays a big part in making Honda generators (and their other products in general) special. At first glance, a fuel tank with a 1.6-gallon capacity seems pretty small. Due to Honda’s innovation, at full throttle, a single tank will last three and a half hours. When utilizing the Eco Throttle System, the minute tank of the EU3000i will last nearly eight hours. Try running a car or any other machine for eight hours on less than two gallons of gas—not going to happen. Just like most small machines, the Honda 3000 EU3000i Handi generator is started via recoil system. With a state of art Honda engine, you’ll be up and running with a few pulls. After the initial ignition, you’ll hardly notice that the generator is running due to how quiet it is. At its loudest, the generator will run at about 58 decibels. By comparison, having a conversation with a few people will creep into the 60s. If your generator starts to get too loud, you might want to consider having it serviced. What can the Honda 3000 EU3000i Handi power?

With 3000 watts of power and 120 volts, you can power quite a bit. On the small end, you can power the basics like fans, hair dryers, blenders, coffee makers and microwaves. Due to the size of the generator, however, you can use all of these at once—no more taking shifts using the power. Starting to think bigger picture, you can power your larger appliances for extended periods of time. This includes things like garage door openers, incandescent lights and other appliances of similar size and power. The largest appliances powered using the Honda 3000 EU3000i Handi generator are refrigerators, freezers and window air conditioners. Not to be outdone, you can even power the AC for an RV, so long as its smaller than 13500 BTU. If you take advantage of the parallel capability, you can expand this selection exponentially.

What we liked

Portability

Honda EU3000IH1A Handi Inverter Generator PortabilityOne of the best parts about inverters is that they are lighter than conventional generators, making them portable. But, what happens when you want an engine large enough to power the biggest appliances around your home at once? Well, weight increases.

To keep the Honda 3000 EU3000i Handi portable, Honda had to get creative. Wheels built directly onto the body and a fold down handle are the perfect solution. Just as someone wheels the cooler to the tailgate, someone else can bring the generator along with ease.

While the wheels and handle certainly provide a clear benefit, they do not take away from function in any way. When not in use, the handle folds completely away, and unless you know it’s there, or are right in front of the generator, you wouldn’t even notice it. The wheels also keep a low profile, recessed in a way that the generator will sit completely flat.

With a dry weight just under 80 lbs., the EU3000iH1A could only be used by a select crowd without an effective transportation system. The body is an awkward shape to lift and carry, so even if weight is not a problem, it is still a difficult item to carry.Honda EU3000IH1A Handi Inverter Generator Portability Handle

Wheeling the generator is only half the battle. The EU3000i has to get into your trunk or truck bed one way or another, and lifting from the bottom isn’t very appealing. To help you out, Honda built two offset handles into the sides of the generator, making it easy to lift. With wheels and handles, anyone can easily set up and put away this generator.

Parallel capability

When you need to add some power, you can use two Honda EU3000i generators together. Essentially, by connecting the two machines with the proper cables, you are doubling their output and the appliances they can power.

Rather than having to purchase an expensive and powerful generator, you can power up whenever the need arises. The best-case scenario is when you and a friend have the same generator—no additional purchases are necessary.

This is most common for camping trips and tailgates. Having double the power opens up an entirely new world of possibilities, taking your experience to the next level. If you’re at a football game, you can power a couple TV’s to watch pregame coverage on all the channels. If you’re out camping, you won’t have to power down the AC in order to run everything else. In these situations, it might feel like you have limitless power, just as if you were in the confines of your own home.

Safety features galore

I like safety. You like safety. Everyone likes safety. Most importantly however, Honda like safety (or keeping their customers safe)—whatever floats your boat.

The Honda EU3000i Handi comes chock full of features designed to ensure safe operation. When you’re moving the generator around, you can close the fuel vent to prevent any spilling. While running, a USDA-qualified spark arrestor ensures that no flames escape and cause damage to you or anything nearby.

We push the limits in all aspects of our lives, so why should a generator be any different. Lucky for us, Honda has included circuits as protection from being overloaded. Basically, if you try to power too much, the circuit will flip and the issue identified before any damage occurs.

Oil Alert System

Like gasoline, your oil levels will eventually need to be replenished. With any motor, running without oil could lead to damage, which eventually requires repair and money taken from your pockets. With Honda’s Oil Alert system, the generator constantly monitors itself and will automatically turn off when oil becomes critically low. Also, oil doesn’t need to be changed like in a vehicle, you just add more.

Honda 2000 EU2200i Inverter Generator – Review & Buying Guide

Amazon has a deal on the Honda EU2200i generator offering it for $1,049.00, a $100 drop from the list price of $1,149.00. While Amazon is not offering 2-day shipping on this deal, shipping is free.

EU2200i Overview

The Honda EU2200i 2000 generator is a lightweight inverter generator. At about 47 lbs., you (or you and a friend) can easily carry this generator wherever it needs to go. A sturdy and ergonomic handle provides a helpful boost as well. Honda EU2200i Lightweight Inverter GeneratorInverter technology provides smooth and efficient power to a variety of home appliances. The EU2200i has enough brute power to keep all your meat in a large freezer frozen, and is steady enough to operate computers and more delicate appliances. Through a process of converting and refining energy before passing from generator to appliance, inverter technology has been able to surpass conventional generators at every checkpoint.

What does the EU2200i power?

To keep it brief, the EU2200i can power just about anything in your home. To get more specific, the more powerful appliances you can power are air conditioners, microwave ovens, TV’s, and incandescent lights. On the smaller end, you can run a hair dryer, blender and portable fan. While you might not be able to power every single appliance at once, you can run several of them at a time. Even a large TV will only take up about 200 watts of power. The likelihood of you having 11 televisions that need to be powered is pretty low, but the ability to so is nice to have in your back pocket. As you might have guessed, you can power quite a bit with the EU2200i. The most valuable thing around your home you can power has to be a garage door. When the power goes out and your only car is stuck inside, you need the ability to get it out. Whether you just want to enjoy it, or it’s the only way you can get to the store for vital supplies, you should be able to get your car out.

Fueling and runtime

Not having to run to the generator to refuel is always more desirable than the alternative. With the EU2200i, a single tank will last at minimum 3 hours, topping out at 8 hours. As you might have guessed, the variance is caused by how heavily you use the generator. If you’re looking to extend the life of a single tank even longer, you can set up an extended fuel tank. This is an aftermarket setup, but can safely allow you to increase fuel capacity. For those that want to sleep through the night, or set it and forget it, this is a great option. Oil does not come with the generator and must be purchased separately. From empty to full, the generator will take about half a quart. Thankfully, Honda offers their own brand of motor oil and given their worldwide presence, it’s pretty easy to find.

Starting the generator

Some people are intimidated when they see a machine started by a pull cord, rather than the turn of a key, and understandably so. Honda makes it easy with an advanced mechanical decompressor system. While some machines make you pull with every bit of strength you have, the EU2200i can be started by anyone. For when you need a little more power

Honda EU2200i ParallelWhat happens when you need a little (or a lot) more power? No, the answer isn’t that you have to start from scratch. Honda has included parallel capabilities on their EU2200i model. This means you can connect two of the same generators together to team up and power bigger, or more appliances and other machines. In taking advantage of the EU2200i’s parallel capability, you can double your power without having to buy a generator at double the price. While you will have to purchase a second generator to take full advantage of this feature, you will have the power needed for every situation. Besides another EU2200i, this generator parallels with EU200iK1/T1 models.

Honda 2000 EU2200i Generator Review

What we liked

Packing a Punch

Honda EU2200i PanelThe Honda 2000 EU2200i portable inverter generator is also called the . First off, it provides 10% more power, but the benefits do not stop there. While power is increased in the EU2200i, Honda was able to keep cost, size and weight almost completely the same.

EU2200i vs EB2200i

Since you’re able to get more power, without increasing price, choosing the EU2200i over the EB2000i is an easy decision to make. Realistically, this doesn’t relate to just generators, but every item we buy. Just because there are some fancy buzzwords on other product overviews, don’t let it block your common sense.

Recoil Area

With any machine that utilizes a pull cord to start, you need to pay attention to where it snaps back into. To help prevent any damage, Honda has included a stamped metal recoil rope insert so as to prevent damage to the body of the generator.

When you spend time starting an engine like this, and you finally hear it kick on, you just let go of the cord. As is the nature of a recoiling rope, it will snap back at the generator itself. Just like pressing the button on a tape measure, if it comes back slightly off line, it could bang against the body. Having this insert not only prepares you for this, but reduces the likelihood that any damage occurs, extending the life of this part and the generator itself.

Low Noise Level

Conventional generators are loud. Inverter generators are not. Honda inverter generators are even quieter. The EU2200i will run anywhere between 48 to 57 decibels. To put it bluntly, that’s so quiet you won’t even notice it.

To give a bit of context to these noise levels, a whisper will measure 25dBA and a quiet office is around 50dBA. Going up the scale, 60dBA is a normal conversation (already louder than your generator) and a noisy restaurant measures 80dBA. Compared to prior generation and generators with other technology, your ears will be happy with this purchase.

What we didn’t like

Recalled twice

Just what everyone wants to hear after spending more than a thousand dollars on a generator—recall.

The first recall came in March, 2019. 200,000 units were recalled due to an issue regarding the fuel valve. Gas was leaking from the valve, opening the door to fire and burn hazards. Thankfully, when you buy Honda, you’re also buying their service. The affected generators were able to be repaired—not replaced.

The second recall came a year later, in March, 2020. This time, more than 300,000 units were recalled. In this case, there were reports of short circuiting due to the presence of salt water. When exposed to salt water, the generator could catch fire or burn someone who touches it.

Not a big deal for those away from the ocean, but considering the amount of people who camp with a generator in proximity to this type of water body, it was concerning nonetheless. Again, Honda stood by their products and was able to remedy the situation via repair.

Based on the fact that this product remains on the market, and those recalled had an avenue for repair leaves us confident in the long-term viability of the EU2200i.

Regular attention required

Before we start, this is not a problem that is exclusive to the Honda 2000 EU2200i generator. This is a problem that plagues all generators—inverter, conventional, all generators.

In order to keep a generator in peak condition, you need to regularly run the machine. If it sits for too long, oil and gasoline could build up in areas where it is not supposed to. You’re going to want to make sure you keep all lines flushed and anything inside fresh. The easiest ways to do this are to run your generator until it’s empty, as well as making sure it runs every few weeks.

By keeping all systems fully operational, you ensure that when the time comes, your generator will be ready to go.

Is this the generator for you?

Switching to inverter

If you’ve had a generator, but never an inverter generator, you want to go with an established brand. Honda is a brand that is true and tested.

They have introduced several generations of inverter generators across different models, in the process finding their rhythm and perfecting the design. As we’ve seen with the recalls of this model, they also stand behind their products and can rectify any errors that they have made.

If you’ve had conventional generators all your life, and want to see what the inverter fuss is all about, the Honda EU2200i provides a great fit.

Need more power than smaller generators

Honda makes smaller generators and bigger generators than the EU2200i. Taking care of adding power is easy due to paralleling, but sometimes the baseline is too low. For a personal home with common appliances, you’re going to want something powerful enough to power your own stuff, but not too much that you are wasting fuel and resources.

If you know that you will need more power than offered by a 1000-watt generator, you need to size up. The EU2200i is the perfect mid-size generator for people who tailgate, camp or live in an area where power regularly goes out.

If you were to go any higher, you would be putting yourself into the industrial level. At that point, the price would be significantly higher and you would have more power than necessary on your hands.

Eco-friendly

Now more than ever, people want an eco-friendly option. The Honda EU2200i provides that. In general, inverter generators are friendlier for the environment than conventional generators. This is due to lower gas consumption and more efficient output.

Where the Honda 2000 generator (EU2200i) gets a leg up on the competition is its eco-throttle. In order to get to that 8-hour single-tank capacity, they need to conserve energy in some ways. By cutting consumption where it can, the rich get richer and despite your gasoline consumption, you are doing it in the most earth-friendly way.

Honda 1000 EU1000i Generator Overview

The Honda EU1000i generator, also called the Honda EU1000i or Honda 1000, is a portable inverter generator. As the name suggests, it can produce 1000 watts of power. Just as you would a suitcase or cooler, taking the Honda EU1000i on the road is no problem. At 29 lbs., this is truly a portable generator. Added weight due to things like oil and gasoline is minimal. With a .6-gallon gas tank, you’ll hardly notice the difference between an empty and fully loaded generator. To give you an idea of what 1000 watts gets you, some of the most common uses of the EU1000i are powering microwaves, coffeemakers, portable fans and televisions. While this this list is far from all-inclusive, it gives you an idea of what you’d be capable of should you choose this model. Based on power levels, this generator is best served running smaller appliances and basic household items. Whether it’s indoors or outdoors, you will have suitable capability to run the necessities. Even though it can run machines that are indoors or outdoors, you must always make sure it is properly ventilated. Due to the nature of generators, allowing excess fumes to build up could spell trouble. Honda cares about their products; they also care about their customers. In each product they design, safety plays an integral role. When oil levels run low, there is no danger. Honda uses their Oil Alert system to automatically shut the generator off before any damage is done to the machine. When you plug too many things in, circuit protection will also prevent the generator from being overloaded.Honda EU1000i Portable Inverter Generator In Action Now you will not be able to power every appliance in your home with this generator alone, but a variety of outlets allow you to use it for multiple appliances at once. At this point, your main concern would be plugging in too many things and having power run too low to be effective. Inverter generator power is considered to be so stable that it can power a computer without any issue. While conventional generators might have momentary lapses and surges, using an inverter generator provides the same experience you would get from plugging something into a wall. Even in a power outage, or from a remote location, you will still be able to get your work done (Wi-Fi permitting). [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qo9lORUtdc[/embed]

Honda 1000 EU1000i Portable Inverter Generator Review

What we liked

Noise level

The Honda EU1000i portable inverter generator is quiet. With older and more traditional generators, this was not usually the case. In many instances, the noise emitted by the generator would drown out everything around you.

For example, if you were using your generator to power a radio for a nice, family sing-a-long, the radio would have to be on full blast. With this generator, you can keep it to a dull roar, with only your singing being the thing that drives your neighbors crazy—not just the generator. If you have a traditional generator, your best bet would be turning it off and going acoustic for the singing with the family around the campfire. Hey—for some people, that’s the ideal situation.

As an added plus, your quality of sleep will increase. Try sleeping with a 20-year old generator running and then try sleeping with a modern inverter generator running. The results will speak for themselves.

Low noise level and protection

All too frequently we’ve seen horror stories of generators being stolen. Whether you’re using it to supply your home with the bare amount of power needed to survive after a storm wipes out your electricity, or you’ve just brought it camping with you—your generator should be there the next morning.

As much as we’d like to live in a society without crime, there will always be people who see (or hear) an expensive appliance running and think of it as a quick payday. The low noise levels emitted by the Honda EU1000i acts as a protection plan of sorts. Without the excessive noise levels we associate with traditional generators, you will be able to run the generator without being detected by anyone passing by.

Power up

When you buy a generator, or any appliance for that matter, you usually have an idea of how you will use it. In many cases, plans change. Rather than to send you shopping again, Honda has made it easy to boost the power level of the generator you’ve already purchased.

This isn’t like a computer that you can boost memory or install additional hardware, but refers to the fact that two Honda generators can work together to supply more power wherever, or whenever, you might need it. This process is called “paralleling”.

User friendly – no experience necessary

Even without having used a generator before, you will have no problem operating the Honda EU1000i. Besides Honda’s concerted effort to include manuals that hold your hand as you walk step by step through running it, everything is labeled.

The feature that helps this all come together, the labels, will help you put into action the plans carried out by the instruction manual. Even on/off are labeled—there is no guesswork involved. With clear labels, you will never have to worry about making a misstep when operating a powerful machine.

What we didn’t like

Upkeep & Maintenance

Like all generators (or machine with an engine), the Honda EU1000i requires regular maintenance and upkeep. Despite the fact there is nothing you can do to avoid this, it is worth noting.  Without proper care, this generator will not last very long.

Whether is it maintenance due to frequent use, or upkeep from begin used so infrequently, plan to spend some time maintaining the condition of your Honda inverter generator. Should you be unable to do this on your own, you will also need to set aside some funds to pay someone for this service.

In a perfect world, your machinery would be able to clean and maintain itself. The truth is, while modern mechanics have surpassed many of our greatest expectations, we still have a long way to go. If you are not willing to put in the necessary hours and dollars to service your generator, you’re better off not buying one in the first place.

Fuel tank

You should never travel with a generator that is already fueled up. Once you get to where you’re going though, most people only want to fill it once. In an effort to reduce size and conserve weight, Honda utilizes a .6-gallon tank. On the bright side, this small tank can last up to 7 hours.

Unfortunately, most camping trips and severe power outages last longer than this. To keep your generator running and your appliances powered, you will have to keep a gas reserve nearby.

While some people are comfortable using extended gas tank setups, it could lead to danger. If this system is not set up properly, it could lead to leaking gasoline or damage to the machine.

Additionally, it means you will be leaving several gallons of gas unattended, and the smaller tank usually gives you an excuse to makes sure everything is running smoothly.

Is this the generator for you?

Pulling the trigger and buying a generator is a big decision. They are expensive and serve a very specific role. When you pick the right model, however, the quality of your life can greatly improve. Whether it’s for recreation or emergency use, you want a generator that you can rely on when the time comes.

Honda EU1000i users will agree with us that the best use for this generator is personal use. Due to power restrictions, the generator is not capable of handling heavy industrial use. Additionally, it is not powerful enough to be relied on for heavy personal appliances. Basically, if you want to run full-size refrigerators, ovens and things of that nature simultaneously, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Due to how easily this generator is operated, it is the perfect introductory model. Rather than relying on your own mechanical prowess, Honda takes all guessing out of the equation. If you’re someone who wants to have a machine like this, but has only a small amount of experience operating them, Honda is the brand for you.

Honda knows their customers, and knows that needs evolve over time. Thankfully, you can purchase an additional generator at a later date that can be used to supplement power.

This helps you get into the world over generators, without overspending or buying a model that is far too powerful for what you need. Since you can upgrade power later on, the Honda EU1000i makes a ton of sense for people who know they need a generator, but are not sure what kind is best for them.

Terms you need to know

Inverter generator (vs. traditional generators)

Inverter generators differ from traditional generators in three main areas: current, power and portability.

Inverter generators produce AC currents, convert it to DC and then back to AC before emitting it and passing it along into your appliances. On the contrary, traditional generators only produce AC currents.

On average, inverter generators are less powerful than conventional generators. They have smaller engines and fuel tanks, but are more efficient. Additionally, inverter generators tend to be lighter as a result. What they lack in power, they certainly make up for with stability. Not a bad trade off when looking at this big picture.

Continuing on with weight, smaller engines and fuel tanks make inverter generators lighter. While some of each kind might billed as “portable”, the Honda EU1000i weighs under 30 lbs. For traditional generators, it is not out of the ordinary for a portable unit to be double that weight.

Paralleled

We talk a little about this in the “What we like” section, but figured we’d provide a little more context here. “Paralleled” is when you take two generators and connect them to work together. Once connected, you will be able to run the generators together as one at their cumulative levels of power.

For example if you use two 1000-watt generators together, you will have 2000 watts of power at your disposal. This means you can run appliances and other things that require more power than supplied by a single unit. Alternatively, you can run more smaller appliances and machines off of the two generators.
