While Nier: Automata highlighted the discovery of humanity in a world that almost forgotten it, Nier Replicant is about the struggle and burden to preserve the little bit of humanity the world has left. Being a Nier game, there is a consistent melancholy that follows the characters of Nier Replicant.
Players get to see how tragic life can be, but if all the game’s conclusions are completed, it ultimately reveals the poetic beauty of life, hard though it may be. Nier Replicant Stays true to much of the original from the 2010 release, at least as far as the plot is concerned. The story, characters, scenarios, and structure have all been preserved. However, the remaster includes gameplay changes, visual improvements, and additional story content that expands on the original story.
The creator of the series, Yoko Taro, is notorious for subverting players’ expectations. The Nier series is notorious for sending players on seemingly innocuous and lighthearted adventures, only to blindside them with deep philosophy about life. Nier Replicant is no different in that regard. The game kicks off in destroyed modern-day Tokyo that’s been invaded by creatures referred to as Shades, but also throws players approximately one thousand years into a future medieval civilization struggling to thrive. The protagonist and his sister seem untouched by all of that time. The sister, fatally ill, provides our protagonist with his motivation: save her life.
Despite the broken world around them, players are treated to the warmth of companionship and friendship that juxtaposes the despair of the game’s universe. Reality provides its challenges for the heroes, but coming to grips with identities judged and condemned by others is tackled as well. The same story that was praised for its deep and gripping narrative in 2010 is still present, but combat has been revamped to something more similar to Nier: Automata, which was the introduction to the overall series for a great many players. The open-world element of the game has not been changed.
There will be a variety of blades available for combat and the mechanics allow for parrying, dodging, and combos, very similar to Automata. Even though the system of mechanics is revamped, the encounters are mostly consistent with the original release. Needless to say, many fans are glad the remake/remaster is being mostly faithful to the cult classic original. Admittedly, some aspects of the game might be a tad outdated, but many fans of the franchise believe the payoff is more than worth it.
Also similar to Nier: Automata, Nier Replicant has different routes players have to go through to get the full story. The player doesn’t exactly have to play the entire game over again, but the conclusion is broken up into different pieces that create a fuller picture. In addition to the previous routes, there is a new ending included as well, giving players of the original game something new to strive for besides some updated mechanics and graphics.
The game had some problems with delivery on time for those who pre-ordered, but that issue has since been rectified for most players.
