Nothing beats free. Games are an expensive investment, with the only cheap ones generally being unimpressive. But right now two more PC games are free in the Epic Games Store; action fighting game For Honor and mystery thriller Alan Wake, both offering action and suspense in different ways.
This is nothing new of course, as Epic Games has been giving away free games for roughly eight months at this point. Even so, they have mixed things up just a bit; the free games became available on Friday instead of Thursday this time, and for the past two weeks Epic has offered up two free games instead of one. According to them, this is because of game ratings. Anytime they offer a game that is rated M or PEGI-18, which may be inaccessible to some players due to parental control settings, they also offer a game with a lower rating. For Honor is a rated M game, so this week Epic is offering Alan Wake to go along with it.
For Honor is a medieval fighting game set in a fantasy world, where knights, samurai, Vikings, and Chinese warriors duke it out in melee combat. All sorts of warriors are available to play, from massive, plate armored knights with halberds to ninja with sickles. There’s a wealth of game modes, including duels for one on one tests of skill, attack and defense styled siege of castles, or four on four team battles. Gamespot gave the game an 8/10 rating for its in-depth combat system, rewarding progression system, and diverse game modes. Their only real complaint was the barebones narrative of the single player story, though frankly, this is one of those games that lives and breathes on multiplayer.
Alan Wake, on the other hand, is all about the single-player experience. This action adventure games plays out very similarly to a mystery thriller, following the story of best-selling writer Alan Wake as he searches for his wife, who disappeared during their vacation in the Pacific Northwest. Along the way, he discovers pages from a thriller novel he doesn’t recall writing in the slightest. GameSpot gave this game a score of 8.5/10, for reasons given by critic Tom McShea:
“The foreboding atmosphere that permeates every inch of this wilderness never lets you forget the dangers that await the unprepared, but the feeling of dread that defines the early portions dissipates as you get deeper into this moody adventure. Alan Wake doesn’t offer enough surprises to keep you unhinged, but the storytelling is so enthralling and the combat is so frantic that you’ll be sucked in until the thrilling conclusion.”
Both of these games are free to claim until August 9th, when they will be replaced by Epic’s next free game. All you need to claim them on PC is an Epic account, which is free to make. And once you claim them, the games are yours to keep forever.
