Despite the fact that Bungie has just revealed a five year plan for Destiny 2 with their Shadowkeep expansion, it seems that the company does actually have plans to present a new franchise to the world by 2025. That’s not to say that Destiny 2 isn’t going to be their main franchise moving forward, but considering how long it has been since Bungie launched the Destiny series, we were beginning to wonder if they would ever do something different.

In an interview with IGN, Bungie’s CEO, Pete Parsons, discussed plans to make Bungie one of the gaming industry’s “best entertainment companies.” He hopes to accomplish this by 2025, and while redefining Destiny 2 is a major part of the plan, he made it pretty clear that introducing some new franchises was a major factor as well.
“So, by 2025 we have a pretty specific path to make sure we transform Destiny and that we have other franchises within the marketplace,” Parsons said. “We need to build our publishing group, but part of our vision is also to become a multi-franchise entertainment company.”
While this makes it pretty obvious that Bungie intends to release some other franchises, it doesn’t reveal any particular details about what those franchises may be. However, considering Bungie’s past, which is almost entirely focused on first person sci-fi shooters, it seems reasonable to assume that one or all of their future franchises will carry similar themes, though it is of course possible for the company to develop something else entirely. Only time will tell what new games Bungie is planning to release.
In the meantime, they certainly aren’t planning to neglect Destiny 2. With five years’ worth of content planned out from the start of the recent Shadowkeep expansion, it’s pretty obvious that Bungie wants to keep their main franchise trucking as well. Of course, such a long plan has raised questions about how long it will be until a Destiny 3 is made, or if one ever gets made at all, but so long as Destiny 2 continues to get regular updates that keep the game interesting, it’s unlikely that anyone will be complaining. Bungie is even releasing a free to play version of the game called New Light, so that’s worth noting as well.
The Shadowkeep expansion will become available on October 1st, but until then Destiny 2 is offline. Whether or not the update will be worth the wait will be answered within the next 24 hours for dedicated fans.
