Fans have waited years for a new feature containing their favorite video game characters, and now the new trailer for Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge has come out promising blood, guts, and so much more in this R-rated animated film.

The description from the official site describes this as not just another animated movie, promising fans the same level of martial arts action and Hollywood violence they’re accustomed too from the beloved video games:

“Based on the worldwide hit game created by Ed Boon & John Tobias, Mortal Kombat Legends:

Scorpion’s Revenge spotlights the once-in-a-generation tournament between the champions of Outworld and Earthrealm—a competition that will ultimately determine the fate of Earth and all its citizens. Lord Raiden, protector of Earthrealm, must gather the greatest fighters of his realm to defend it from the evil Shang Tsung in the battle to end all battles—Mortal Kombat!”

According to IGN, the film’s story will essentially be a retelling of the first Mortal Kombat tournament (which was told in the first live-action Mortal Kombat as well as referenced over the numerous video games which have since come out since the first arcade game). It will also give a larger spotlight to the world of the Mortal Kombatants, offering fans an opportunity to explore the cast of characters as the story dives into not only their backstories but also a chance to please fans of the game by showing off their unique abilities and classic signature moves.

Tasked to bring in this new age of Mortal Kombat to the small screen are film and animation veterans Ed Boon (director of the cult classic Batman: Assault on Arkham) and Teen Titans Go! Vs. Teen Titans writer John Tobias. The combination of these DC Comics properties experts and Warner Bros.’ world-class animation team are sure to also excite fans of the highly successful DC Comics Animated Universe which has struck up an extensive and tightly connected series of animated films, (such as Batman: Hush              and Dark Justice League, just to name a few), rivaling only that of the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The creative team isn’t all there is to get hyped about, according to the Nerdist, the lineup of star-studded talent voicing each character is also something to look forward to. The cast of Scorpion’s Revenge includes Community star Joel McHale as boxer and celebrity Johnny Cage, “Jennifer Carpenter as Sonya Blade, Jordan Rodrigues as Scorpion & Hanzo Hasashi”. Some more notable stars include “Steve Blum as Sub-Zero, Artt Butler as Shang Tsung, Darin De Paul as Quan Chi, Robin Atkin Downes as Kano, David B. Mitchell as Raiden, Ike Amadi as Jax Briggs, Kevin Michael Richardson as Goro, Grey Griffin as Kitana & Satoshi Hasashi, and Fred Tatasciore as Demon Torturer.”

This film is sure to bring back the larger fanbase of Mortal Kombat fans who may not have been engaged with the video game franchise in a while, which has recently come out with its eleventh venture. Aside from the two live-action films from the 1990s and a short-lived (and universally ignored) web series several years ago, this will be the entry point for a new generation of potential fans as the world gets ready for the full-on live-action experience set for theaters in 2021.
