What is a 3-wheeler ATV?
The four-wheeler ATV is the most commonly recognized style of all-terrain vehicle today. In the 1970s, Honda created one of the first three-wheeler ATVs. The unique design was intended to help boost sales in the winter when motorcycle sales declined. Almost 80% of all-terrain vehicles in the 1970s and 1980s were three-wheelers. The 3-wheeler ATV for sale was a very powerful vehicle, and the Honda ATC90 was the most popular model at the time.
Unfortunately, 3-wheeler ATVs were not very safe at the time. They lacked proper shock absorbers and used oversized tires not suitable for bumpy terrain. They were difficult to handle and hard to turn, leading to a lack of control while driving. At the time, 3-wheeler ATVs for sale were also being marketed to children. Men purchased these vehicles for their wives or kids without realizing they were just as powerful as two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. This led to a considerable number of accidents and injuries.
In 1988, the government sued the manufacturers of 3-wheeler ATVs for sale. The lawsuit resulted in a ban on 3-wheel ATVs and manufacturers could no longer produce the vehicles. The Consent Decree required ATV manufacturers to stop production on three-wheel ATVs, repurchase unsold stock, and promote properly sized four-wheel ATVs. The decree also included stipulations for warning labels and owner’s manuals.
Can you buy a 3-wheeler ATV for sale?
Today, new three-wheel ATVs are no longer in production. However, it is legal to buy a used 3-wheeler ATV for sale. If you choose to ride a three-wheel ATV it is important to pay attention to safety precautions. Three-wheel ATVs are as powerful as four-wheel ATVs and should be treated as potentially dangerous machinery.
While three-wheeler ATVs may not be made anymore, some manufacturers produce three-wheeled motorcycles. Motorcycles and street-legal cars with only three wheels do not violate the government order against three-wheeled ATVs. However, they cannot be used by children and require a licensed driver.
Price of 3-Wheeler ATVs for Sale
Three-wheeler ATVs for sale are not very common because they have not been produced in decades. Honda is the most common brand for three-wheel ATVs, including the ATC200x, ATC250s, and ATC125. The price of a 3-wheeler ATV for sale can range from less than $1,000 to more than $10,000. The price will depend on the age and condition of the vehicle. An ATV in good, working condition may cost more than one that requires repair or maintenance. Most three-wheeled ATVs for sale are from the 1980s, when production was at a high point.
