Coffee Maker with Grinder Overview

Kids take their vitamins. Adults take their coffee. You don’t ever age out of needing essential nutrients and vitamins, but you certainly age into coffee being a necessity to function. As Americans, we thrive on convenience. As hard as you try to convince yourself (and validate your ways), the most cost and time effective way to get your morning caffeine fix is by brewing a pot in your home.

Is a coffee maker with grinder (built-in) the right choice for you?

When you buy a coffee machine with grinder, you’re putting two appliances into one. Not only does it provide two critical functions for fresh coffee consumption, but it conserves counterspace, something we can never get enough of.

When you have a coffee machine with built in grinder, freshly ground coffee beans are always on the table. Other than being able to tell your coworkers you only drink the freshest coffee, there are plenty of other benefits with the most important being taste. While there is nothing wrong with buying pre-ground coffee, grinding it right before it goes into your mug lets you channel every bit of flavor and oil into what you’re drinking. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing a coffee bean grinder and maker:

Taste

Pre-ground beans can fall victim to a number of things that affect your coffee-drinking experience. The most dangerous element of simply existing in your kitchen is that it could be contaminated with the other various aromas that exist within the same area, ultimately dulling the natural taste. Secondly is contamination via moisture and oxygen.

Exposure to either of these natural occurrences will also disturb the oils that lie within the coffee bean and lead to a less-than-full tasting brew. Bottom line, as long as you control when and how your beans are ground, you can ensure a powerful tasting cup of coffee.

Price

Coffeemaker/grinder combos cost a bit more than your traditional coffee makers—and so they should, it’s two appliances. With a larger investment, you need to pay attention to the finer details. Among the most important is the type of grinder.

Grinder blade type

There are three main ones that you’ll see in our guide: Blade, Wheel Burr and Conical Burr. Each have their pros and cons, but it boils down to preference. You have to know what you like and make your purchase accordingly. See our coffee maker buying guide below for a breakdown of each.

How you like your coffee

Besides grinder preference, you also need to ask yourself a question you should already know the answer to. How do you like your coffee? Some people like it black, other people like it any way but black. What’s important is that you do a deep dive into your machines capabilities and how those functions will best serve your needs.

Even though you’ll want to leave a little wiggle room should you ever expand your coffee-drinking horizons, making sure you’re covered for what you already like prevents your coffee maker from being a wasted purchase.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Breville BES870XL Espresso Machine Review

Despite being designed for home use, the Breville Barista Express Espresso Machine has the looks and functionality of a coffee maker you might see operating in a professional setting. At about a foot all the way around (12 x 11 x 13.5 inches), you can brew countless ways in a contained environment. With a coffee maker that has such a range of features, you’re going to want to read the manual on this one.

Sometimes you want a cup of espresso, other times you want a pot. For the espresso fanatics, what’s important is having the ability to vary the amount you brew so that you do not end up wasting excess or having to go through the entire process multiple times just to get a couple shots of espresso. With dose-controlled grinding, you have the freedom to brew just the right amount of espresso, and thanks to the conical burr grinder, it will taste the same every time.

If you know anything about making espresso, you know that water temperature plays a huge role in getting your desired outcome. To account for this, Breville has included a digital interface that lets you track and control water temperature, making it easy to brew the perfect shot of espresso every time. When you purchase this model you get a variety of accessories that includes a steam wand. Using this will let you create awesome designs on your latte; with a bit of practice you’ll be a Pinterest star in no time.

It’s a bit of understatement to say that people have been happy with their purchase of Breville’s Barista Express Espresso Machine. The feature that everyone loves the most is unsurprisingly grinding power, which earns 4.6 stars. This is followed closely by an onslaught of impressive features at 4.5 stars which includes Versatility, Material Quality, Easy to Use and Easy to Clean.

2. Best Compact: Cuisinart DGB-700BC Grind and Brew 12 Cup Automatic Drip Coffee Maker with Grinder (Updated Version)

4.5 out of 5 stars

Cuisinart DGB-700BC Grind & Brew Automatic Coffee Grinder and Maker Review

What appears to be just a coffee maker is actually a 2-in-1 programmable coffee maker with grinder. The Cuisinart 12-Cup Grind and Brew automatic coffee machine with grinder is a compact solution for those who want freshly ground coffee beans for their morning joe. By putting both functions into a single machine, you are saving time and money, as well as space since you can take care of everything by using this all in one coffee grinder maker.

As the items name lets you know, this Cuisinart production can hold 12 cups of coffee in its carafe. Though a dozen cups of coffee are the final outcome, it all starts with an 8oz hopper where you load your coffee beans in, before stepping back and letting the machine take charge.

Grinding coffee beans happens through the use of a conical burr grinder, after which the brew process continues “in-house” before making its way into your favorite mug. A smooth transition from fully formed coffee beans into a ground state and then straight into your cup ensures a fresh and full tasting coffee. If you want to vary your consumption, this model has three strength settings so that you can have your perfect blend each day.

It is not unusual to wake up and start making a pot of coffee, but as the aroma starts to fill the room and infiltrate your nasal passages, you want that first cup immediately. Rather than make you wait for the entire pot to finish brewing, Cuisinart implemented Pause(TM), a system that puts brewing on “pause” so that you can make yourself a quick cup before allowing the rest of cycle to finish up. By the time you drink your first cup, the rest will be ready and you can continue without interruption.

This model earned a 4.3-star overall rating with the top-rated features coming in at a tie for the top spot with Blending Power and Flavor both rated at 4.6 stars.

3. Best Splurge: De'Longhi EC9335M 'La Specialista' Espresso Machine - Features Dual Heating System, Advanced Latte System, Sensor Grinder & Hot Water Spout for Americano Coffee & Tea

4.5 out of 5 stars

De’Longhi EC9335M La Specialista Review

Here we take it back to a coffee espresso machine with built-in coffee grinder that lets you brew what you want, how you want and when you want. A unique combination of versatility and a design fit for select styles of coffee, La Specialista, made by De’Longhi, will have you feeling like a professional barista after just a short amount of time spent learning the system.

What do people love? There’s a ton of answers we don’t want to get into, but if you ask us, instant gratification is not just something we love, but something we as a society have come to expect. La Specialista features a 1-second quick start so that when you decide it is time for coffee, you and your machine are on the same page. This advanced system bypasses heat-up time and keeps your coffee maker ready to roll.

Keeping in tune with immediate brewing, things get started using a conical burr grinder, pumping freshly ground coffee right into the belly of the beast that is La Specialista. Additionally, you’ll be able to switch from brewing espresso to frothing milk in just a matter of seconds, with no real delay between operating the two functions.

Not only do you have the ability to make lattes on your own, but La Speciaista comes with the versatility to do so how you like. With this system, there are two options for style of froth: microfoam or rich foam. With microfoam, you can create art in your latte, replicating the work of things that you otherwise would only see online. Rich foam is a bit less exciting, but provides the perfect finishing touch to cappuccinos.

For overall rating, this model earned 4.1 stars. Practically jumping off the page is a 4.7-star rating for Value for Money, something that as financially conscious consumers we love to see at the top of any list. Next up on the list are Flavor and Blending Power, each of which are rated at 4.4 stars—still pretty impressive.

4. Best on a Budget: Cuisinart DGB-550BKP1 Grind & Brew Automatic 12 Cup Coffeemaker

Where to buy:

See Product Amazon

4 out of 5 stars

Cuisinart DGB-550BKP1 Grind & Brew Review

Compact and affordable, the Cuisinart 12-Cup Grind and Brew Coffee Maker is an advanced and intuitive machine with so many settings that you can continuously vary your coffee intake without having to remake a single pot. Basically, even the most amateur of users will have no problem brewing a variety of coffee.

Drinking coffee, pretty enjoyable. Cleaning up after making coffee—or any type of cleaning for that matter, not as enjoyable. Cuisinart knows this and has tried to mitigate some of the monotony and difficulty of cleaning a messy machine. When you buy this appliance, you get a gold tone filter, as well as a charcoal filter.

The charcoal water filter is tasked with negating any effects of using tap water, such as taste and odor. When the time comes to clean up, the grinder chamber, which features a blade grinder, and filter area are completely separate for ease of cleaning.

If you want a strong cup of coffee, or even a weak one for that matter, there are four levels to choose from. One thing that comes into play with this setting is that the stronger the coffee, the longer it’s going to take to brew. Having a coffee grinder is great, but sometimes you don’t have access to coffee beans. In some cases, this would nullify the machine, but the Cuisinart 12-Cup Grind and Brew Coffee Maker has a grind-off feature so that you can use pre-ground coffee as well.

The overall rating earned for the Cuisinart DGB-550BKP1 is a 3.8-star rating. The silver lining is that individual features earned higher ratings; Timer Function, 4.5 stars and Flavor, 4.3 stars.

5. Best Standalone Grinder: Breville BCG820BKSXL The Smart Grinder Pro Coffee Bean Grinder

Where to buy:

4 out of 5 stars

Breville BCG820BKSXL Bean Grinder Review

Looking a bit more the part of a personal kitchen coffee grinder, the visual appearance of the Breville Smart Grinder Pro is best described as your typical coffee grinder with a storage bin on top. Funny thing is, by looking at it, you know exactly what it is and how to use it—a rarity these days. With this model, you have the choice of a pair of color designs: Stainless Steel and Black.

Most people want to be in control of their lives. Everybody wants to be in control of their coffee. Breville has included something they call Dosing iQ, a system that allows you set grind time all the way down to .2 second increments so that you can get the dose you’re looking for with every grind cycle.

Want to make sure everything else is set to your ideal preference? A front-facing LCD display lays out the various settings you need to know in order to get your perfect grind. This display also lets you decide how much needs to be ground so that if you want just one cup, you can get just one cup. If you want a half dozen, you can get a half dozen.

Up top, you have an 18 oz chamber to store coffee beans before being ground and ultimately make their way into your mug. Before the beans are ready to be brewed, they pass through a conical burr grinder that provides a nice, even grind and taste for every cup you’ll end up brewing. This is by no means a one-size-fits-all grinder. In fact, it features 60 separate grind settings so that you can fine tune each grind cycle for the coffee you’re brewing. From Espresso to French Press, you’re covered.

6. Best Grinder Splurge: Rancilio HSD-ROC-SS Rocky Espresso Burr Coffee Grinder

4 out of 5 stars

Rancilio HSD-ROC-SS Coffee Grinder Review

Rancilio helps you start your morning routine the right way (and your early afternoon routine on Saturdays and Sundays). The Rocky Espresso Coffee Grinder provides practical and direct coffee grinding, with minimal frill. By taking a simple design and adding in high-quality parts, Rancilio has struck gold by creating a product that is easy to use for even the most amateur of coffee brewers.

The Rancilio Rocky Espresso Coffee Grinder accomplishes its goal (of grinding coffee beans in a superior fashion) through the use of a flat burr grinder. By simply turning a lever, a set amount of coffee beans is released into the grinding chamber and released so that you can get on your way with brewing. The hopper itself has a .65lb capacity so that you will not need to reload every time you grind, but you will need to every couple uses.

One feature that we found a bit surprising, but reassuring nonetheless is that each grinder is physically tested before being sent to the customer. Rancilio shares this fact so that consumers who find some coffee residue on their machine when it arrives are not alarmed.

We agree that under normal circumstances we would be appalled if our new machine arrived and appeared used, but knowing the background on this makes all the difference. The buyer, this means that the product has passed a rigorous quality control process and that the grinder that sits in my kitchen was prepared with care.

Coffee Maker with Grinder Buying Guide

Intro

Now that you have a taste of what is out there, you’ll have to begin refining exactly what it is you’re looking for. It’s inevitable that somewhere along your shopping journey you will see a fancy feature that will convince you to deviate from your actual needs—we want to help you avoid that. We’re going to provide a little more info on practical features that you need to know. Combining this info with the rest of our work (and your additional knowledge and research), we think that you’ll be able to pick out your perfect coffee grinder coffee maker with ease.

Don’t be scared to open your wallet

If you’re in the market for a coffee grinder and maker, chances are you’ve been a drinker for some time and already have a basic coffee maker in your home. The machines that provide you with a basic drip are more affordable, but provide an inferior experience. If you want to step up to the proverbial big leagues, you need to be prepared to spend a bit more. This goes double for those who plan on brewing espresso and other types of coffee. If you want a specialty machine, you’re going to have to pay for a specialty machine, but the rewards are there for the reaping.

Types of built-in grinders—a breakdown

You are buying a coffee maker with a built-in grinder, aren’t you? One of the most important aspects of this purchase will surround what type of grinder your coffee grinder + coffee pot includes.

Blade Grinder

The least expensive of all grinders, it carries out the chopping of coffee beans using a revolving blade. As you leave the blade on, the ground coffee becomes finer. Two major criticisms of this type of grinder is that it leads to unevenly chopped beans and that leaving the blade on too long produces heat. With unevenly sized beans you get inconsistent taste. If you leave behind large chunks, your missing out on additional flavor each bean could have offered. When the grinder produces heat, some of the freshness is prematurely absorbed, once again altering taste for the worse.

Conical Burr Grinder

The more popular choice of burr grinders, the word conical refers to the cone shape of this piece. With this method, very little heat is produced and grind size in consistent due to the fixed amount of space between the revolving cone shaped piece and outer walls of the grinder. As such, some of the most positive pieces of feedback surrounding this grinder type is that it provides a consistent taste and does not easily clog.

Flat Burr Grinder

Like the conical grinder, a flat burr grinder rips coffee beans to shreds by rapidly spinning a toothed metal piece against a solid surface. The flat version, however, is characterized by a circular piece that sits flat across the bottom of the chamber. As with its conical counterpart, this process produces minimal heat and grinds beans evenly giving way to great tasting coffee.

Your brew, your way

The best part of having your own automatic coffee maker with grinder is that you do not have to rely on anyone else knowing your perfect formula. When your coffee is brewed in your kitchen, and your kitchen only, you are in the driver seat. Do yourself a favor and work to learn your machine so that you can get the most out of it. After all, you have nobody to blame but yourself if it doesn’t turn out perfect anymore. Happy brewing everyone.
