Best Bike For A 9-11 Year Old Boy Overview

Shopping for a bike for a boy that’s 9, 10 or 11 years old in 2021 should be esay. Where do you start? With so many options out there, how do you know which one is the best fit for your son? We’ve put together a list of the top bike made for boys aged 9 to 11 and selected the top options based on price, options, functionality and real customer reviews.

Riding a bike is a rite of passage for children.  The freedom and independence of bicycling on their own is a skill that will serve your child for a lifetime.  Choosing the right bike for your adolescent can be daunting.  What are the safest spokes?  Is the bike the right size? What is the best way for a bike to stop?  There are many points to deliberate over when choosing the right bike for your child.

We have compiled a list of the top bikes for your nine-year-old; the benefits, features, and negatives of each are included to help you make the best choice!

Here are the best bicycles for a 9-11 year old boy:

1. Best Overall: Guardian Kids Bikes Ethos Bicycle

4.8 out of 5 stars

Guardian Kids Bikes Original Ethos Bicycle Review

Guardian Kids Bikes provide many choices in wheel size. You can choose an 18-inch wheel for children with an inseam of 20”-24”, a 20-inch wheelbase perfect for children with a 22”-25” inseam, or a 24-inch wheelbase for children with a 24”-28” inseam.  If your nine year old is tall, this is a great choice!

The Guardian has options regarding drivetrain. You can choose a one gear model, a six-gear model, or a seven gear model on a 20-inch wheelbase.  It does not provide this choice for other wheel sizes.

This bike has a special patented brake system on the front handlebars. Guardian boasts being safer for children by using a hand control braking system that stops both tires at an equal pace. The bike is also lightweight, making stopping safely easier. If you choose a bike with more than one gear speed, this will be an important consideration.

The frame is steel and has custom geometry, created specifically for children.  The base has a lower center of gravity and a wider wheelbase, making it easier for children to maneuver.

The only negative we could find about this model is the lack of higher speeds for 18” and 24” wheel sizes.

2. Best Budget-Friendly: Dynacraft Magna Throttle Boys BMX Street/Dirt Bike

4.5 out of 5 stars

Dynacraft Magna Throttle Boys BMX Street/Dirt Bike Review

The Dynacraft Magna Throttle Boys BMX Street/Dirt Bike has a 20” wheel base.  This is suitable for children with a 22”-25” inseam.  The Dynacraft drivetrain has one gear.  It is not suitable for riding in hilly areas but is built for both on the road cycling as well as dirt cycling.

This bicycle has coaster brakes, you stop by back pedaling.  This is not as safe as the other models and should be considered before purchase. The Dynacraft has a basic shaped steel frame but extra thickness makes it tough.  The wheels are metal and outfitted with reflectors making nighttime riding safe.

A con to this bike is the lack of front hand brakes.

3. Best for Beginners: RoyalBaby Kids Freestyle Bicycle

4.5 out of 5 stars

RoyalBaby Kids Freestyle Bicycle Review

The RoyalBaby Freestyle Kid’s Bike has two options that could be suitable for a nine-year-old.  One wheelbase is 18”, perfect for children with a 20”-24” inseam.  The largest option is a 20” wheelbase, perfect for children with a 22”-25” inseam.

This bicycle has one gear drivetrain that is wrapped by a metal chain guard for safety.  This will work for new bike riders but will not be suitable to ride in hilly areas.  RoyalBaby has a front hand brake system but also includes a back pedal brake system.  This adds a layer of protection for quicker stops, perfect for someone just learning.

The TIG welded steel frame is 1.2 mm thick, making it a sturdier frame than most bikes. The wheels are made of steel. If your child wants to do tricks, the BMX style handlebar is a great choice. There is also a holder for a water bottle and a kickstand to keep the bike upright when not in use.

One negative aspect of this bike is the backpedal brakes.  This isn’t as safe as back brakes run by a hand braking system.

4. Best for Tricks: X-Games FS20 Freestyle Bicycle

4 out of 5 stars

X-Games FS20 Freestyle Bicycle Review

The X-Games FS20 Freestyle Bicycle has a 20” wheelbase and will work for children who have a 22”-25” inseam.  The drivetrain on this bike has only one gear, perfect for beginner bike riders.  It would not be suitable to ride up steep hills. The X-Games has both a front and back wheel hand brake system, making it a safe choice in braking options.

The frame on this bike is tig welded steel with metal alloy spokes on the wheels.  It is a basic frame with a BMX style handlebar.  This bike would be perfect for beginner-level tricks.  It also has pegs on the front and back, an added bonus.

The con to this bike is its lack of features.  It is a basic bicycle, perfect for beginners, but not much else.

5. Best Entry-Model: Kent Pro 20 Boy’s Freestyle Bike

4 out of 5 stars

Kent Pro 20 Boy’s Freestyle Bike Review

Kent Pro 20 Boy’s Freestyle Bike is a 20 inch wheel base bike.  It is best if your child’s inseam is between 22” – 25”.  This cycle has only one gear.  It is not suitable for riding in hilly areas. The chain does have a guard on it for extra safety. The Kent Pro has front and back brakes controlled by a hand clamp.

The steel frame is tig welded with metal spokes and wheels, very straightforward.  It does include a freestyle rotor for tricks as well as pegs. Some major negatives to this bicycle is no BMX style handlebar for tricks or any additional features.

4 out of 5 stars

Kent Razor Nebula BMX Freestyle Bike Review

The Razor Nebula BMX/Freestyle Bike is a 20 inch wheelbase bicycle.  It is suitable for children with a 22”-25” inseam. This bicycle has one gear on it’s drivetrain.  It does boast that it is useful for tricks, but is not suitable to ride uphill. Hand brakes for both the front and the back are useful to stop the bike safely, especially if using for tricks.

The Razor Nebula has a tig welded frame with a freestyle rotor built in. The wheels are a metal spoke. Pegs are also included. This bike is pretty straightforward, the only negative we can see is if your child doesn’t want to do tricks, this bike wouldn’t be as useful.

Bicycles For A 9-Year-Old Buying Guide

Measuring

To choose the right bike, you will always need to start with measuring your child’s inseam.  This measurement will help determine the right size bicycle to purchase.  Bikes are sold based on wheel size, not the height of the seat as many assume. To choose the correct bicycle for your child, you must purchase a bike that will fit your child now, not in the future.  If the bicycle is too large it will not distribute weight evenly and riding will become too challenging.

If your child’s inseam is between 20”-28” you will want an eighteen-inch to twenty-four-inch wheelbase, depending on use and versatility needs of the bike. Suspension is not suggested for this age range.

Drivetrain

Next, we must think about the drivetrain on the bike.  Gears are harder to navigate for adolescents, only experienced riders should have a bike with more than one gear to operate.  However, if your child is biking in areas with hills they will need a gear system to bike up the hill.

Choosing the right brake system is also important to think about.  What goes fast must slow down and front hand brake systems are best for experienced riders.  Back pedal brakes provide an extra layer of protection as well.

Frame

Finally, we must consider the design of the frame for the bike.  A good bike will have metal wheels and spokes. If your child is hunching or reaching too far forward while riding, the frame of the bike is not the right length.  Some frames come with extra features like pegs or water bottle holders and this may have a greater weight on your decision.
