PlayStation Headset Overview
Not all headphones are built the same (especially for gaming). You’ve got your basic gas station headphones that make it so you don’t have to use your TV’s speakers when playing video games. The next best options are your Skullcandy’s and Apple iPhone headphones. These are the first tier of headphones where you’ll have a microphone to communicate and an easy solution for the casual gamer.
Once you’re ready to take your PlayStation gaming to the next level, you get a pair of “real” PlayStation gaming headphones, headphones made specifically for PlayStation gamers.
What makes a great PlayStation headset?
Noise Cancellation & Isolation
Gaming headphones are built to cancel outside noise, pick up on low sounds, such as footsteps and other faint noises, and give you a high-quality microphone for optimal communication.
Noise cancellation helps you to funnel out all outside audio and focus solely on what’s happening on the screen in front of you. By concentrating all surrounding noise on the video game you’re playing, it will heighten your hearing and help you block out all outside distractions.
Modern noise cancelling technology is fantastic for toning out low-pitch noise from your surroundings, such as the roar of a city outside or passing traffic. Even with this feature, you will still be able to hear someone calling out to you or other high-pitched noises.
To put it plain and simple, the noise-cancelling quality of gaming headphones is superior to that of inexpensive earbuds. The point of gaming headphones is to hear sounds that are otherwise inaudible to other players not using gaming-specific headphones.
Rather than have someone sneak up behind you or a nearby staircase, you’ll have a competitive advantage since you’ll hear them coming. Gone will be the days of missing the “faintest” of details solely because your hearing hardware is sub-par.
Microphone
Hear, and be heard. Gaming headphones let you do both. For being heard, your headset will have a high-quality microphone so that you will be able to effectively communicate with your teammates. Through the art of collaboration, you’ll be able to get better at whatever game you’re playing and see a better W/L and K/D as a result.
Once you’re in the between game lobby, you’ll be able to let your opponent know just how badly you took it too them—and whatever other colorful commentary you might want to add.
PlayStation Exclusive Technology
The most important thing to be aware of when you purchase this type of headset is that most are geared specifically towards a single brand of console. The ones that we’re reviewing today are compatible with PlayStation 4.
Compatibility
You’ll see that some are compatible with other devices and setups, however these headsets are at their best when paired with their intended collaborator. If you are a cross-console gamer, you’re going to want to pay special attention to these compatibility features or risk having to purchase multiple pairs of headphones.

Here are the best PlayStation headsets:
1. Best Overall Value: Beexcellent GM-3blue-us PS4 Gaming Headset with Mic, Deep Bass Stereo Sound, Noise Isolation, LED Light
Beexcellent GM-3blue-us Review
Bargain buyers rejoice. Beexcellent has produced a high-quality gaming headset, at a fraction of the price of its competitors and it’s one of the most versatile to boot. With a list price at under $60, you’ll be able to invest the rest of your budget in additional accessories that will help with your PlayStation gameplay, such as advanced controllers and premium batteries for long lasting gaming sessions.

Considering the amount of people who regularly change systems, it is reassuring to know that you won’t have to buy a new headset every time you switch your gaming console.

2. Best Wireless: Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Wireless PlayStation Gaming Headset with Surround Sound in Black or White
Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Review
Turtle Beach is the Cadillac of gaming headsets. Just as consoles, controllers and games themselves have improved and incorporated cutting edge technology, Turtle Beach headsets have done so as well. For the Stealth 600, there are two color choices, Black/Blue and White/Blue. For pricing, you can usually find this model for under $100—a relative steal in a market where prices have soared in recent years.
The Stealth 600’s are glasses friendly thanks to the ear cushions being enclosed by a breathable mesh fabric and a design intended to remove pressure on your glasses. The mesh enclosure is a game changer for glasses wearers as it is significantly more pliable than a synthetic cover.
As a 100% wireless headset, it is of the utmost importance to include a battery capable of lasting through extended PlayStation gaming sessions. To no one’s surprise, Turtle Beach delivers with an on-board rechargeable battery that can last up to 15 hours before needing some time on the charger. We know that people like to play for long periods of time, especially on the weekend, but if you play for 15 hours straight, you should be taking a break and getting some sunlight anyway.
Given that there are no wires, the Stealth 600’s operate using a Bluetooth connection as well as a USB adapter so that you can connect with other devices, such as the Nintendo Switch. When you want to completely immerse yourself into your gaming, you’ll face no obstacles thanks to virtual surround sound. Since you’ll be blocking out all outside noise and using a headset that delivers crisp and clear sound, it will be as if you are right in the game.
With all the features offered plus unbeatable sound quality, the Stealth 600’s earn a solid a 4.5-star overall rating.

3. Best on a Budget: Turtle Beach Recon 70 PlayStation Gaming Headset in Black, Red or White
Turtle Beach Recon 70 Review
A premium headset at a bargain price. The Turtle Beach Recon 70 gaming headset features a list price under $40 but functions at the level of higher priced headphones. Coming in 3 bold color designs, you’ll have your pick of Black/Blue, Red/Black or White/Blue.
As many lower-priced headsets do, this one comes with a wired connection. What may seem like a curse to some is a blessing to others as the wire means that you will never have to worry about charging your headset, connecting through Bluetooth or having the battery run out when trying to collaborate with your teammates.
One of the top aspects of this wired headset is its ability to be used across nearly all platforms. Basically, if there is a 3.5mm jack on your console, you can connect. This means you’ll be able to use the same headset regardless of whether you’re using a PlayStation, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC or your phone (with adapter on newer iPhones). At an affordable price, you will be hard pressed to find as versatile a headset on the market in this price range.
On the Recon 70’s, there is a flip-up microphone, which when down is capable of picking up your voice and transmitting it clearly across your gaming waves so that your teammates will be able to listen to your commands. When it is flipped up, it mutes the microphone for when you’re playing in a lobby you do not know anyone in. The best part of the microphone flipping up is that it will blend into your headset entirely when not in use.
The Recon 70 headset has earned a 4.4-star overall rating.

4. Sony Original: Sony PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset for PlayStation 4 in Black, White or Rose Gold
Sony PlayStation Gold Headset Review
For PlayStation, by PlayStation. The only headset on our list developed by the people at PlayStation, meaning all of the features and details are designed to accentuate the finer details of the Sony system. With a list price of under $100, this is an upper to mid-price range option.
You’ll also have your choice of 5 different colors: Black, White, Fortnite Black, Fortnite White or Rose Gold. Anytime you have the chance to throw Fortnite in there, marketers around the world know that you should considering its incredible rise the past couple years. This is especially ironic since there are no actual differences with these headsets, just additional in-game benefits. Namely, there are outfits, backpack and a couple thousand v-bucks.
The “it” factor for this headset is clearly sound quality. Since the engineers behind this product are able to work directly with the people designing PlayStation’s, they were able to develop custom audio modes available for download that are tailored to specific games, emphasizing the finer details that otherwise would not get the attention they deserve.
From explosions and enemy call-outs to footsteps and whispers, you’ll hear it all with this headset thanks to top of the line 7.1 virtual surround sound. Additionally, this headset has the look of headphones thanks to the hidden microphone.
If you take advantage of your PlayStation’s VR features, this headset makes connection and gameplay easy. Thanks to a 5mm jack, it is no challenge to connect your VR and mobile devices. Besides the jack, the headband design lends itself to wearing VR headsets without any type of interference. Keep in mind that this is not a Bluetooth headset and connection must be made using a USB transmitter setup.
This headset earns a 4.4 stars overall. Considering its extremely niche market, the headset has done a good job promoting itself within a heavily saturated market where sometimes versatility can overpower more practical and functional features.

5. Best Splurge: HyperX KHX-HSCP-RD and KHX-HSCP-GM Cloud II PlayStation Gaming Headset with 7.1 Surround Sound, Memory Foam Ear Pads and Durable Aluminum Frame in Red or Black
HyperX Cloud II PlayStation Headset Review
You might not be as familiar with Kingston Technology, who produces HyperX headsets, but you’ve undoubtedly come in contact with some of their other products. One of the largest suppliers in the world of memory products and the internal components of video game software, Kingston is trusted for a wide range of technology—and for good reason.
The Cloud II headset has a list price of just under $100 and comes in 2 colors; Gun Metal or Black and Red.
Most headsets are noise cancelling. The Cloud II’s are noise cancelling AND echo cancelling. Both of these features are made possible through an advanced Inline Card System that works together for optimal noise cancelling.
The Cloud II’s are not restricted to only PlayStation, as the headset is compatible with PC and Mac as well. The headset is also connected using a 3.5mm jack. To control your audio output, you’ll use an audio control box which functions as a remote control that you can keep your eyes on, rather than on ear controls. When you want to take your game on the road, you can safely transport your headset using a mesh carrying bag.
When you want to play with friends or even just talk to your teammates, you can attach high quality microphone. When you want to absorb yourself in the game, but have no interest in being heard, the microphone easily detaches. Hidden benefit to those you’re playing with—no one will have to hear your music playing in the background or you yelling when you’re on a cold streak.
The Cloud II earned a 4.3-star overall rating. It’s rated at 4.4 stars for gaming headset quality and sound quality.

PlayStation Headset Buying Guide
There is not a single PlayStation headset that will be the best fit for every gamer. Every person has different preferences and needs, and because of this, you’ll need to do your own research to find your ideal headset. To help you get a better idea of what direction you should go in, we’ve included some general parameters to help assess your own needs.
Wired vs. Wireless
Wired factors
There’s pros and cons to both options. For wired headphones, you never have to worry about running low on battery, but you will have to deal with wires tangling and getting in the way. While it is not guaranteed, it could impact your gameplay.
Wireless factors
Wireless headphones operate on a fixed battery life. This might lead to your headset dying at the most inopportune times and require you to spend time charging the headset or regularly buying replacement batteries, a cost which adds up over time. On the bright side, you won’t have to fight with any aggravating wires.
Battery Life
As mentioned in the previous section, battery life really only applies to wireless headphones since wired headsets have a direct connection to a power source. If you opt to go wireless, you might need to make preemptive accommodations such as buying a charging station or a stockpile of batteries.
If you’re the type of person who knows they will forget to charge when they are not playing, it may be a wise move to go the wired headset route.
Universal Compatibility
With the rise of mobile, PC and Switch gaming, there has been a coordinating rise in the need for gaming headsets that are compatible with multiple consoles. Gone are the days where the only place someone would play video games was on a PS3 or Xbox 360. Instead, a golden age of gaming has been ushered in and with an increasing number of games being able to be played on multiple platforms simultaneously.
For multi-platform gamers, it is imperative that you read the finer details about what systems your headset is compatible with.
Glasses Wearers Beware
Speaking from personal experience, there aren’t many gaming related things more uncomfortable than wearing a headset with glasses. Considering about 75% of American adults use some type of vision correction, it makes sense that companies are now offering options designed specifically for glasses wearers.
If you fall into this category, you’re going to want to check that you have this feature or risk having excessive pressure placed on the arms of your glasses which will leave you uncomfortable and not wanting to wear your headset entirely.
Microphone Style
There are two main styles of microphone, without much variance in terms of functionality. Your choice of the two types, flip-up and stationary, will come down to personal preference.
With a flip-up microphone, you can easily stow it away when not in use, and in many cases, it operates the mute feature. With a stationary microphone, you’ll have to use controls on an earpiece to change volume and anything else.
