The console that was introduced in 2017 has hit another sales milestone, surpassing 15 million units in North America alone since its release, according to NPD group, which tracks video game sales. Nintendo Switch has even hit a bigger success: being the top selling console for 10 consecutive months.
“As we enter our third holiday season, Nintendo Switch is creating smiles and enjoying broad appeal, with more than 15 million consumers across North America playing their favorite games whenever and wherever they like,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser in a press release. “And this holiday, we are bringing Nintendo Switch owners even more fresh and unique entertainment experiences, like Ring Fit Adventure, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020, adding to the system’s large and diverse library of games.”
According to Nintendo, more than 14 of the games released for the console have surpassed more than 1 million units; Four have sold more than 6 million units: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Super Smash Brothers.
Recently, Nintendo announced the lighter, smaller version of the console, the Nintendo Switch lite, which comes at the affordable price of $199. The original console sells for $299.
The Switch promises new releases in the coming years with the refresh of the console and should see more success as consumers continue to purchase the device. The console offers more than 2,000 game titles, a catalog of classic games through Nintendo’s online membership and the ability to play multiplayer across the world.
The groundbreaking console has used all of Nintendo’s best qualities, combining nostalgia with high-tech. Players from the new generation of gaming and those who grew up with Nintendo’s first-generation consoles can unite over the Nintendo Switch’s catalog of games.
The ability for the device to connect to the TV or be played in handheld mode adds an extra level of ingenious design. Players on the go can take the Switch at a moment’s notice for long trips or hook up to their TVs for hours of in-home gaming experience. The console’s multifaceted playability gives consumers the chance to hone in on their own gaming gaming experiences, whether the first time they played a Nintendo console was with the handheld, chunky Gameboy or the Super Nintendo.
