Square Enix has announced recently that the Trials of Mana HD Remake will be released in the west on April 24, 2020, for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One. By preordering it for any of those platforms prior to May 21st, you’ll also get the Rabite Adornment DLC, which will increase your XP gain until you reach level 10. Pre-ordering on PlayStation 4 will also net you a special avatar, while doing so on Steam will get you a unique wallpaper.

The exact origin of Trials of Mana is a little difficult to explain, but here’s the gist of it; Trials of Mana is completely separate from the Collection of Mana, which included Final Fantasy Adventure for the GameBoy, Secret of Mana for the Super Nintendo, and the original 1995 Trials of Mana for the Super Famicom. These are all part of the same franchise, but their names got pretty mixed up during localization. The Trials of Mana HD Remake is actually separate from all of this, despite sharing a name with one of the entries. Along that vein, the Collection of Mana has been made available for the Nintendo Switch. So if you’re looking to scratch that retro itch before the Trials HD Remake comes out, the Collect of Mana is there to do so. As for the remake itself, it’s a clear upgrade from its old school points of origin; the graphics and sound will be monumentally improved, but there will be many changes to the actual mechanics of the game as well. As for which mechanics will be changed in particular, we aren’t really sure. All we can really hope is that the original fast travel system won’t be changed; after all, who doesn’t like launching themselves to the next destination with a giant slinkie?
With one major part of the franchise getting revitalized, it’s a wonder if any of the rest of the Mana franchise will get a remake somewhere down the line as well. Like most corporate decisions, the answer to that question may be dependent on how well the Trials of Mana HD Remake does in terms of profit. If it makes enough money, it’s possible that some of the other Mana games could get remakes in the future as well.
