Those familiar with the Epic Games Store are likely also familiar with the Trello Roadmap, which used to give customers a rough idea of what to expect in the future. However, some recent changes to the Trello Roadmap include a removal of release dates for features that are currently in development. Originally, the Trello board was created near the launch of the store, to provide more transparency to its customers.
It was in a recent blog post that Epic Games announced that both dates and expected delivery times would be removed from the Trello board. It used to provide approximate estimates of when new features would be available, but there were many times that Epic Games failed to meet those windows or rolled them back entirely.
The blog post reads as follows: “The Trello roadmap is not fulfilling the goal we set when it was introduced. The goal with the Trello roadmap is to provide visibility into the development cycle for the store’s more player-centric feature set. While it’s accomplished that to some degree, we’ve missed the mark accurately displaying the timelines for feature delivery. We regularly delay feature releases due to shifting priorities and the need for further iteration. We’re always focusing on improving, and we believe the Trello can be improved as well.”
Now, rather than providing a rough estimate as to when new features will be made available, the Trello board is supposed to focus more on features that are currently in development, as well as “more granular updates on individually listed features.” The categories that such features will be divided into are vague for now, merely being ‘what’s coming next’ and ‘what are the plans for the future.’ According to Epic, the Trello board will now be updated every two weeks, where it will go into more detail about major updates in the future.
While this change may seem unwelcome to some, it makes sense from a public relations point of view; no one likes to get their hopes raised only to have them dashed when a feature isn’t released at the right time. Expectations are kept tame when you get to hear about future updates, but only know they are coming at some undisclosed point in the future. Either way, this change with Epic Games roadmaps probably won’t put too large of a dent in the rising popularity of their online game retail platform.
