A New Mass Effect Game is Allegedly Underway at BioWare Edmonton

Despite concerns that the Mass Effect IP had been effectively neutered by Andromeda years ago, it would seem all of our hopes and dreams have not been crushed just yet.

Thanks to information from Kotaku, it seems that a new Mass Effect game is in very early development at BioWare Edmonton, under the supervision of Mike Gamble. Gamble’s been working at BioWare since 2009, and had a hand in both Mass Effect 2 and 3 (also Andromeda, but we’re trying to get our hopes up here). He also worked on Anthem, but it seems he’ll be returning to where he started.

Everyone’s expectations and theories regarding a new Mass Effect game cropped up during the recent N7 day, in which fans celebrate the franchise and more often than not reminisce about the ‘good old days’ of the original trilogy we all love so much. But on that day, Casey Hudson of BioWare posted many tweets regarding the franchise, and as you can see, it sure sounded a lot like hints for a new game, especially since he included a lot of concept art to go with it.

“We have so many ideas for things we want to do in #MassEffect, so much concept art that hasn’t yet been brought to life, and so many stories yet to tell.”

At the time, this all seemed far too good to be true, and yet, it seems like it may be a reality at some point. According to Kotaku: “In addition to the much-anticipated Dragon Age 4, which BioWare teased last year, a new Mass Effect game is in very early development at the Edmonton office under director Mike Gamble, a longtime BioWare producer.”

Of course, ‘very early development’ means that it could be quite some time before we see another Mass Effect game. It seems unlikely that we would see one by next year, or even 2021. It could take even longer than that, with top rated AAA titles taking several years to produce in today’s gaming world. Even so, it’s far better to know that a game is in development at all than to be left wondering if the franchise would be left to fade away.

That said, here’s hoping that a new Mass Effect game, whenever it may be released, capitalizes on all of the things we loved about the original trilogy, and skips all of the parts we didn’t about Andromeda. A combination of the best of both aspects of the franchise would probably be the most rewarding.
